The shopping list for a petals-and-candles surprise

A room covered in rose petals with small flames all around is the classic surprise for an anniversary, a proposal, a birthday or a first night. You need two things that come from two different places:

• Rose petals: fresh, from a local florist or flower market, bought on the day. We do not sell flowers.
• Candles: small ones in cups for the floor or bed shape, plus one or two showpieces for the bedside. That part we make, hand-poured in soy wax in Jalandhar.

Our picks:

• Heart Tealights: Rs 349 for 10 red heart-shaped tealights in clear cups. The cup matters here: wax and flame stay inside it, so a stray petal does not sit in melted wax.
• Floral Candle Duo: Rs 649 for two peony-shaped candles, one deep rose pink and one ivory with pink-tipped petals. They look like flowers themselves, so they sit naturally among the petals on a bedside table.
• Vanilla Reverie: Rs 549. If you want the room to smell warm and sweet, this vanilla candle in an amber jar is our only scented one.

How many candles and petals for each set-up

The usual mistake is buying too few candles, so the room looks sparse. Rough guide:

For petals, tell the florist the size of the heart or the length of the path and ask how many roses that takes. A path always needs more than a heart. Many florists sell loose petals by weight.

Where to put the candles, and where never to

• Never on the bed. Make the heart of petals on the bed, and keep every candle off the mattress, pillows and bedsheet. Put the candles on the floor around the bed or on the bedside table instead.
• On the floor, leave a gap. Place tealights a hand's width apart along the petal line, not on top of petals, and away from the bedsheet edge and curtains.
• Use a tray. On a wooden bedside table, set the Floral Candle Duo on a small metal or ceramic plate.
• Light them last, put them out first. Light the candles just before your partner walks in. Put them all out before you go to sleep, and never leave the room with candles burning.
• If there are children or pets in the house, consider LED tealights for the floor and keep only the bedside candles real.

Adding a gift to the surprise

If the surprise is also the gift, a candle they can keep works well. Things we do not sell, and where to get them

• Fresh or preserved rose petals: a florist or flower market for fresh; online flower shops for preserved petals that last longer.
• Rose-scented candles: our only scent is vanilla. Scented-candle brands make rose fragrances.
• LED candles and fairy lights: electronics and decor stores. Safer for the floor in a busy house.
• Balloons and letter banners: party supply shops.

Safety, once more

Trim each wick to about 5 mm, keep flames away from petals, fabric and hair, never leave candles unattended, and do not burn them for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
