Valentine gift for your boyfriend (or any guy): what men actually like, and when a candle is the right call

Start with him, not the shop

Search for Valentine's gifts for him and you get the same list everywhere: watches, wallets, perfume, hoodies, gadgets, gym gear. Those are on every list because they work. The better question is which kind of guy you are buying for, and whether a candle suits him at all.

Some honest rules:

• If he lives in a hostel or PG, open flames may not be allowed. Pick something else, or a candle he can keep unlit.
• If he never lights anything at home, a candle is decor, not a gift he uses. Choose one that looks good unlit.
• If he likes his room nice, or you two spend evenings at his place, a candle is a good, grown-up gift.

A Valentine's gift for a guy friend should be clearly friendly. Skip the hearts and the teddy. A single navy spiral or the vanilla jar with a short, funny note is enough, or a snack box and a card. If you are a group of friends doing Galentine's or a friends' dinner, a pack of tealights for the table is a shared thing nobody misreads.

What else guys get, honestly

If your budget is bigger, the usual winners are a watch, a perfume, a leather wallet or belt, sneakers, a jersey of his team, headphones, a weekend trip or concert tickets. If he likes strong, woody or smoky scents, specialist candle and fragrance brands carry those; our only scented jar is vanilla. A candle sits well next to any of these as the small second thing.
