A gift for their room, not for their house

A room decor gift is different from a housewarming gift. You are not decorating a family home; you are adding something to one person's own space: a teenager's bedroom, a college hostel room, a first PG, or the room a friend has just moved into. That space is small, often rented, and very personal. So the gift has to be small, need no drilling, and match a look the person has already chosen.

Shaped candles do that well. They sit on a desk, a shelf or a bedside table, they look like decor even when they are not lit, and they come in very specific looks. From our range, hand-poured in pure soy wax in Jalandhar:

Rules for a hostel, a PG or a rented room

This is where room decor gifts often go wrong.

• Many hostels ban open flames. Most college hostels and many PGs do not allow candles to be lit. Our shaped candles still work there as decor on the shelf, unlit. Say so in the gift note, so the person does not get into trouble.
• No nails, no adhesives. Wall hangings and frames need drilling or tape that damages walls, and landlords keep deposits for that. A piece that stands on a surface is safer.
• Small footprint. A hostel desk is about the size of a laptop and a book. One candle, or a pair, is right. A set of five pillars is better for a friend with her own flat.
• Easy to carry home. Students move out every summer. A gift that fits in a suitcase lasts longer than a lamp or a rug.

Room decor gifts we do not make

Candles are one kind of room decor. Other popular room decor gifts in India: warm-white fairy lights and LED string lights (often the only lights a hostel allows), a small indoor plant or a succulent, a photo wall kit with clips, a cushion cover or a throw, a sunset lamp, a mirror for the desk, posters, a bedside clock, or a scented reed diffuser. We do not sell any of these; home decor stores, gift shops and marketplaces carry them.

A good pairing if lit candles are not allowed: fairy lights from another store plus one of our shaped candles as the shelf piece. Delivery to a hostel, PG or flat address

• Dispatch in 24 to 48 hours; delivery 2 to 7 days after dispatch, anywhere in India. Check the estimate for their pincode on the product page.

If they can light it: place it on a steady, heat-proof surface away from curtains, bedding and books, never leave it burning unattended, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
