Objects that photograph well, and why

When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini in October 2026 which decor items look good on Instagram, they named the same handful of things: sculptural ceramic vases, indoor plants, framed wall art, textured cushions and warm light from candles. The shops they named were Meesho, Bohofy, India Circus, Pure Home + Living and Amazon.

What those items share is the reason they work:

1. A shape you can read at phone size. A curvy vase or a sculpted candle is recognisable in a small square. A plain cylinder is not.
2. Texture. Ribbing, weave, petals and marbling catch side light and give the photo depth.
3. One warm light source. A lit candle adds a bright point that the eye goes to, and warms the whole colour of the frame.
4. A colour that contrasts with your wall. Ivory on a dark shelf, terracotta on a white wall, pastel on beige.

What the camera likes, and what it flattens

• Side light beats top light. A window to one side, in the hour before sunset, shows texture. The ceiling tube light flattens it.
• Groups of three, at different heights. One tall, one medium, one low reads as styled.
• Fewer, bigger objects. Ten small things become clutter on screen.
• A plain background. Linen, a wooden board, a plain wall. Busy prints fight the object.
• Avoid shiny plastic and mirror finishes, which pick up glare and your own reflection.

Candles that work as props

• The festive reel: urli candles on a brass thali with marigold, rangoli at the edge of the frame.
• The shelf shot: one tall spiral, the peony duo, and a ceramic vase, three heights.

Filming with a lit flame

When you are watching the screen instead of the candle, it is easy to forget it. Keep hair, dupattas and dried flowers clear of the flame, use a heat-proof base, never walk away from a lit candle, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours. If the shot only needs the look, leave a sculpted candle unlit; it lasts as a prop for longer.
