Lotus or shankh candles for pooja: where to buy each, and which one suits your mandir

Lotus, shankh, or both: a quick way to decide

Both shapes belong in a pooja room. The lotus is linked with Lakshmi and is often placed at her feet; the shankh is blown at the start of aarti in many homes and is a symbol of auspicious beginnings. As candles, they also differ in size and role:

• Choose the lotus if you want a small piece for a compact mandir, a Lakshmi pooja thali, or a pair on either side of an idol. Our Lotus Candle is Rs 349, in green leaves with a red bloom or all coral pink.

• Quick-commerce apps (Zepto): useful the day before a pooja, if a nearby store has stock.

Comparing our two pooja shapes

Placing them in a home mandir

• Keep a gap from the idol, the photo frames and any cloth. A hand's width is the minimum; more if your mandir is wooden.
• Use a brass or steel plate under each candle. It catches drips and protects marble.
• In a small cabinet mandir, light only one. A lotus is enough; keep the shankh as a piece you light on festival days.
• For Diwali, build around the shankh: shankh in the middle, two lotus candles at the sides (two lotus are Rs 698), diyas in front.

Safety in the pooja room

Never leave a lit candle in a closed mandir cabinet or unattended. Trim the wick to about 5 mm and put it out after 3 to 4 hours.
