Lighting the tulsi for her wedding
Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial wedding of the tulsi plant to Lord Vishnu (as Shaligram or Krishna), celebrated in the month of Kartik, a couple of weeks after Diwali, on or just after Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Families decorate the tulsi pot like a bride, build a small mandap of sugarcane, and light diyas around the plant in the evening. Customs differ from family to family and region to region, so follow your own elders on the ritual itself. What follows is only about the light and the decor.
If you want the diyas and decorative pieces ready instead of buying loose clay diyas, oil and wicks, these are the pieces we make for exactly this kind of corner:
| Piece | What it is | Pack | Price | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diya Candles | Soy wax candles in terracotta-red diyas with a carved lattice rim | 6 | Rs 449 | in a ring around the tulsi pot |
| Lotus Candle | Layered lotus flower candle, green and red or coral pink | 1 | Rs 349 | at the foot of the pot, facing the family |
| Urli Candles | Two flower-shaped urli bowls with a gold rim, topped with a wax sunflower | 2 | Rs 699 | either side of the mandap |
| Matki Candles | Four little red matki pots, hand-painted with a vine border | 4 | Rs 599 | on the steps or the threshold |
| Sunflower Tealights | Ivory tealights in clear cups, each topped with a yellow sunflower | 10 | Rs 449 | along the path or balcony edge |
A set-up for a balcony tulsi, and one for a courtyard
Most city homes keep the tulsi on a balcony or a window ledge, so space is the limit.
- Balcony or ledge (small): one pack of Diya Candles (six diyas) around the pot, one Lotus Candle in front. Rs 449 + Rs 349 = Rs 798. The pot stays the centre; the light frames it without crowding the sugarcane.
- Courtyard or tulsi vrindavan (larger): six diyas around the base, the Urli pair at the two front corners, and a pack of Sunflower Tealights along the steps. Rs 449 + Rs 699 + Rs 449 = Rs 1,597, which also crosses the Rs 999 free shipping line.
- Adding colour: the Matki Candles bring the red and green of a bridal palette, which matches the red chunri many families drape on the tulsi.
Keep the flame side of every piece away from the tulsi leaves, the chunri and any sugarcane leaves of the mandap. Wax diyas sit lower than oil diyas with tall wicks, which helps on a crowded ledge.
Wax diyas or clay diyas with oil for Tulsi Vivah
Both are fine for the decor; the choice is about practicality.
- Clay diyas with ghee or oil are the traditional choice, and many families use them for the puja itself. They need filling, wicks and a tray to catch spills.
- Soy wax diyas are ready to light, do not spill on the floor or the pot, and can be relit on the following evenings of Kartik.
A common middle path: light one ghee diya for the puja as your family does, and use the wax diyas for the decorative ring.
If you need something we do not make
- Marigold garlands, sugarcane, the chunri and shringar items come from your local market, not from us.
- Brass or silver diyas for the puja are a metal-shop or temple-shop buy; we only make wax pieces.
- Electric diya lights or fairy lights for a big courtyard are sold by electrical and decor stores. We do not sell LED lights.

Lighting them on a windy balcony
Place each candle on a stable, heat-proof plate or tile, never directly on the soil of the pot. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before lighting, keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours, and never leave the flames unattended, especially with children running around the mandap.
