This is usually the budget of a close friend, a cousin, an uncle's family or a senior colleague. Three ways to give it well:

• Pool it. Two friends at under Rs 1,000 each can give the Urli and Shankh set together, with both names on the note.
• Give it at the haldi or mehendi, not the reception. Smaller functions have family close by who will keep the gift safe and tell the couple who it came from.
