Matki and urli candles online: where to buy pot and bowl candles, and which shape to pick

Matki or urli: two traditional vessel shapes, two different jobs

A matki is a small clay pot, the kind used for water or butter. A urli is a wide, shallow bowl, usually brass, that holds flowers and floating diyas at the entrance or near the mandir. As candles, both bring that Indian shape to a shelf or a pooja corner without oil or water:

• Pick matki candles for a row: steps, a windowsill, a balcony ledge, or a set of four around a rangoli. Our Matki Candles are Rs 599 for 4 little red pots, hand-painted with a green and yellow vine border.
• Pick urli candles for a centrepiece pair: either side of the mandir, a coffee table at Diwali, or a wedding welcome table. Our Urli Candles are Rs 699 for a pair of flower-shaped urli bowls with a gold rim, filled with gold-flecked soy wax and topped with a yellow sunflower.
• Pick both if you are setting up a whole festive corner: Rs 1,298, which ships free.

Other sellers the AI assistants named

In our October 2026 test, ChatGPT and Gemini named Otilia, Candles by Midnight and Endora three times each, plus Amazon and Flipkart. Blinkit, Fulgent, Melting Aura and Etsy came up too.

• Otilia, Candles by Midnight, Endora, Fulgent, Melting Aura: small brands with their own sites, cited from those sites. Check each one's current designs; vessel candles change by season.
• Amazon and Flipkart: the widest range of pot and bowl candles, from many sellers. Look at the "sold by" line and whether the wax is named.
• Blinkit: for a same-day festive buy in many cities, from local stock.
• Etsy: mostly makers outside India; check shipping time and cost before ordering.

We have not compared their prices or wax, so we do not quote them.

Comparing our two vessel candles

If you want more of the same feel, add Diya Candles (Rs 449 for 6 terracotta-red diyas). Matki plus diyas comes to Rs 1,048, also free shipping.

What to check before buying any pot or bowl candle

• Is the vessel part of the gift? Many people reuse an empty matki or urli for a plant, sindoor or small change. Ask what the vessel is made of if that matters to you.
• How deep is the wax? A shallow bowl holds less wax than it looks; a pot holds more.
• Painted or printed? Hand-painted borders vary slightly piece to piece; that is the sign of handwork.
• Is it stable? A round-bottomed pot needs a flat base before you light it.

Safety: Matki and urli candles online

Stand each pot or bowl on a heat-proof plate, away from flowers and cloth. Trim the wick to about 5 mm, stop after 3 to 4 hours and never leave it unattended.
