Our Urli Candles are Rs 699 for a pair. Each one is a small flower-shaped urli bowl with a gold rim, filled with gold-flecked soy wax and topped with a yellow sunflower. They are hand-poured in pure soy wax in our workshop in Jalandhar and delivered anywhere in India.

They come ready to light. You do not need to fill water, float flowers or balance tealights.

Urli candle or a water urli with floating candles?

The word "urli" means two quite different things when you shop, and it is worth knowing which one you want:

• A traditional urli: a wide, shallow brass or ceramic bowl that you fill with water, flower petals and floating candles. It is big, it sits on the floor at the entrance, and it needs fresh water and flowers each day.
• An urli candle: a small urli-shaped vessel already filled with wax, like ours. It sits on a table or a mandir step, gives the same festive look and needs nothing but a match.

If you already own a brass urli and want candles for it, you need floating candles, which we do not make. If you want the urli look without the water and the daily upkeep, our pair is made for that.

Where an urli candle pair looks right

Because they come as two, they are made for symmetry:

• Either side of the main door on Diwali, on top of the rangoli or on a small stool.
• Either side of the mandir, with the idols in the middle.
• At the two ends of a dining or centre table for a festive dinner.
• On a mehendi or haldi stage table, where the yellow sunflower suits the colour of the day.

• Brass and ceramic urlis (the big water bowls) are sold by home decor stores, handicraft stores and puja shops. Choose by width and weight.
• Floating candles and flower-shaped floaters for a water urli are sold by candle wholesalers and marketplaces. We do not make floating candles.
• LED urli lights are an option if you want something with no flame at all.

Safety: Urli candle

Light the urlis on a flat, heat-proof surface, away from the door curtain, the toran and loose rangoli powder. Trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave them burning unattended and do not burn them for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
