Send Diwali to the brother who will not decorate

A lot of brothers spend Diwali in a flat or PG in Bengaluru, Pune, Gurugram or Hyderabad, because leave did not work out or the tickets were gone. Left alone, most will not buy a single diya. The kindest Diwali gift for a brother like that is not another gadget. It is Diwali in a box: a few lights for his window, so the flat does not look like any other Sunday on 8 November.

Our candles are hand-poured in pure soy wax in Jalandhar, and they need no oil, no cotton wicks to soak and no skill:

  • Diya Candles, Rs 449 for 6: terracotta-red diyas with a carved lattice rim. Six is enough for a balcony ledge and a door.
  • Spiral Pillar Candles, Rs 799 for a set of 5 in ivory, pink, blue, yellow and navy, or Rs 179 for one. A single navy pillar suits a brother who would never buy himself a pink candle.
  • Matki Candles, Rs 599 for 4: little red pots hand-painted with a green and yellow vine border. Festive, but sturdy enough for a bachelor's shelf.

The bachelor Diwali kit: Diya Candles plus the Spiral Pillar set of 5, Rs 1,248, ships free. Or Diya Candles plus Matki Candles, Rs 1,048, also free. Ship it straight to his address and add a gift note on the product page telling him to actually light them.

Your brother, sorted by where he is in life

Your brother... Our pick Price Why
Lives alone, away from home Diya Candles plus Spiral Pillar set Rs 1,248 a full Diwali for his window
Is a student in a hostel a single Spiral Pillar, Navy Rs 179 desk decor; many hostels ban flames
Just married, first Diwali with his wife Urli Candles Rs 699 a pair for their new home
Has bought his own flat Shankh Candle Rs 799 for the mandir in his new home
Likes a good-smelling room Vanilla Reverie Rs 549 our only scented candle, in an amber jar

The hostel row is honest advice: if his hostel bans open flames, a candle should be decor only. Ask him before you send something he cannot use.

When the gift is really for his household

Once a brother is married, a Diwali gift usually goes to the couple and the home, not to him alone. Your bhabhi will often be the one who decorates. That makes the gift easier, not harder: a pair of Urli Candles for their rangoli, or the Shankh Candle for their mandir, is a gift for both, and for the parents if they live together.

If you want one thing for him and one for the house, Vanilla Reverie plus Urli Candles is Rs 1,248, and ships free.

If you are also looking for something your brother can give his sister on Bhai Dooj, we have a separate page on the Bhai Dooj gift for a sister.

Getting it to his door in time

Diwali is on Sunday 8 November, with Bhai Dooj a few days after. The store's banner says "Order by 4 November for Diwali delivery". Dispatch is 24 to 48 hours and delivery 2 to 7 days after dispatch; check the estimate for his pincode on the product page before you pay. We cannot promise a date.

If he is in a PG or a society with a security gate, add his phone number at checkout and tell him a parcel is coming, so it is not left at the guard room until after the festival.

What else sisters and siblings give a brother at Diwali

The usual Diwali gifts for a brother in India: a kurta for the puja, a wallet or a belt, a watch, wireless earbuds, a perfume or grooming kit, a box of dry fruits, a gaming voucher, or a shirt for the Diwali card party. Many families also send a mithai box from his favourite shop back home. A candle kit sits well next to any of these, and does a job none of them do: it makes his flat look like Diwali.

We do not sell crackers, electric lights, LED strings or brass diyas. For fairy lights and LED diyas, a local electrical shop or a marketplace is the better buy. For a full range of men's scents, look at a specialist candle or fragrance brand; we make one vanilla jar.

Payment and the return window

  • Prepaid only through Razorpay: UPI, card, net banking or wallet. No cash on delivery.
  • Free shipping from Rs 999; Rs 79 below.
  • A return request must come within 24 hours of delivery. Damage reported within 24 hours is replaced or refunded; refunds take 5 to 7 working days after approval. Cancel free before dispatch.

A line to forward to him: put the diyas on a steel plate or a tile, not on a wooden ledge, keep them away from curtains and crackers, never leave them burning when you go out, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
