The one Diwali day that is about the two of you

Diwali Padwa, also called Balipratipada, comes right after Lakshmi Puja, on the first day of the new lunar fortnight. In 2026 Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November and Padwa on Tuesday 10 November. In Maharashtra it is the husband-and-wife day of Diwali: the wife does her husband's aukshan, waving a lamp on a thali, applying a tilak and sometimes offering sweets, and the husband gives her a gift in return, called ovalni. In Gujarat this is usually also Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, and in many homes a husband gives his wife something to start the year.

Do not confuse it with Gudi Padwa, the Marathi New Year in spring. Diwali Padwa is the November one.

The ovalni gift is traditionally gold: a coin, a nath, a pair of earrings, bangles or a chain. A Paithani or a silk saree is the other classic. If that is your main gift, a candle is not a replacement for it. What a candle can do is make the evening of Padwa feel like hers, and give her something small she keeps on the bedside after the festival.

Setting up her aukshan thali

Your wife will usually set the thali herself, with a niranjan or diya, kumkum, rice and a sweet. You can make the space around it ready:

• Light a ring around the pat or chowrang where you will sit. Six Diya Candles, Rs 449 for 6, terracotta-red cups with a carved lattice rim, give a steady glow without oil spills on the floor or the rangoli.
• Put the Shankh Candle or the urli pair beside the thali, not on it, so the thali stays traditional and the candle is the decor.
• Keep the ovalni gift ready in a box or envelope, so you can give it the moment the aukshan is done. That is the custom, and it feels better than fetching it from the cupboard.

The wax diyas are decor and light for the room. The lamp she waves in the aukshan should still be her own niranjan or ghee diya, as her family does it.

Timing a gift for 10 November

This year Padwa is on 10 November, two days after Lakshmi Puja, so a parcel for Padwa has the same deadline as a Diwali parcel. The store's banner says "Order by 4 November for Diwali delivery". If you are ordering after that, check the delivery estimate for your pincode on the product page before paying; we cannot promise a date.

If you are ordering to your own home, let the parcel come with the rest of the Diwali shopping and keep it aside. If you live apart, for work in another city, you can ship straight to her address, add gift packaging and a gift note on the product page.

What else husbands give on Padwa

The honest list: gold first (coins, earrings, a mangalsutra pendant, bangles), then a saree (Paithani, Kanjeevaram, a Banarasi), then a smartphone or a watch, a handbag, a spa voucher, or a trip planned for after the festival rush. Some couples simply go out for dinner on Padwa night, the first meal of Diwali she has not cooked. A candle from us is a small, personal addition to any of these, not the centrepiece.
