Are candles safe in a baby's nursery? Not lit ones. What to buy for the room instead, and where a candle can go

No: do not burn a candle in a nursery, and do not keep one where a baby or crawling child can reach it. Use a plug-in night light or a flameless LED candle from a baby store or Amazon instead. A real candle belongs in a grown-up room, lit only when an adult is present, such as the unscented Raajkosh Lotus Candle (Rs 349).

Key takeaways

  • Never burn a candle in a nursery or near a sleeping baby
  • Use a plug-in night light or flameless LED candle instead
  • Real candles only in another room, with an adult present
  • Once a baby crawls, keep even unlit candles out of reach
  • Soy wax does not make a flame safe near a baby

A plain verdict for a baby's room

We sell candles, and our answer is still no. When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini in October 2026, both said the same, citing child-health and fire-safety bodies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and national fire services. The reasons are simple:

  • Fire. A nursery is full of soft things that catch quickly: cot bumpers, muslin cloths, curtains, soft toys.
  • Burns. Hot wax and a hot vessel are within reach of a standing toddler sooner than parents expect.
  • Air. A baby breathes faster than an adult in a small closed room. A flame and any added fragrance are best kept out.
  • Sleep. The room is most often used while the baby sleeps and the adults are tired, the exact moment a candle gets forgotten.

That applies to unlit candles too, once the baby can crawl or pull up: small parts, glass and wax are not toys.

What to buy for the nursery instead of a flame

  1. A plug-in night light with a warm, dim glow for night feeds. Sold by baby stores and on Amazon.
  2. Flameless LED candles if you want the look of candles on a high shelf. Pepperfry and Amazon both list them. Pick ones with a sealed battery cover.
  3. A dimmable lamp placed out of reach, for reading a story.
  4. Soft decor that cannot burn: wall art, a name board, a mobile hung safely above the cot by the rules on its box.

Where a real candle can live in a home with a newborn

Candles and babies can share a home. They just should not share a room. Good rules:

  • Only in a room the baby is not in, such as the living room after bedtime or the parents' dining table.
  • Only while an adult is awake and present. Blow it out before you go to check on the baby.
  • On a high, stable, heat-proof surface, far from curtains.
  • Unscented, for the first months.
  • Put the cooled candle away out of reach once your child starts crawling.

If you were gifted candles for the baby's room

It happens: a pretty teddy candle arrives at the baby shower. Keep it, but move it. Put it on a high shelf in the living room as decor, or save it for a grown-up evening. If it is one of ours, the Bonnet Teddy Candle (Rs 449) looks just as sweet unlit on a bookshelf, well above a toddler's reach.

Our candles, and why none of them belong in the cot room

Raajkosh hand-pours pure soy wax candles in Jalandhar. Soy wax does not make a flame safe near a baby; no wax does. For the rest of the house, these are the calm, unscented pieces we would suggest to new parents:

  • Lotus Candle, Rs 349: a layered lotus, low and wide, for a pooja shelf or living room.
  • Braided Candles, Rs 849 for 4: round and stable, in soft pink, blue, yellow and peach.
  • Spiral Pillar Candles, Rs 179 each, for a dinner table once the baby is asleep.

We do not make LED candles or night lights; buy those from a baby store. Our orders are prepaid (no cash on delivery), dispatch in 24 to 48 hours and arrive 2 to 7 days after dispatch.

When you do light one, elsewhere in the house: trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave it unattended, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
