A shopping list for the godh bharai space, item by item

A godh bharai (also called a baby shower, seemantham or valaikappu in different regions) is built around one seat: the mother-to-be's. Everything else frames her and the photos. When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini in October 2026, they agreed on most of this list:

1. A floral backdrop of marigold and jasmine, or a fabric drape with flowers. Local florists and event decorators make these; 7Eventzz and BalloonDekor were cited for packages.
2. A decorated seat or jhula for the mother-to-be. Often rented from a decorator.
3. Torans and floral hangings for the door. Flipkart and local markets sell ready torans.
4. A pastel balloon arch in baby pink, blue, mint or peach, if the family likes a modern touch.
5. A brass urli with floating flowers near the entrance or the seat.
6. Personalised signage and photo props. A name board or a 'Mom to be' sign.
7. Candles, as an accent. Ready-to-light pieces on side tables and the gift table. From Raajkosh, hand-poured soy from Jalandhar:

Colours that work for a baby shower ceremony

• Traditional: marigold orange, haldi yellow, deep pink and green leaves, with gold. Pair with Urli Candles.
• Pastel modern: baby pink, sky blue, mint and peach. The Braided Candles are already in these four colours.
• Mixed: a marigold backdrop with pastel balloons is common. Keep candles in one palette so the table does not look busy.

Many families avoid choosing pink or blue alone, since prenatal sex determination is not allowed in India. A mixed pastel set side-steps that.

Where candles go, and where they must not, with a mother-to-be in silk

A godh bharai means a seated woman in a heavy saree with a pallu, aunties leaning in with thalis, children running around, and lots of flowers and fabric. Flames need real care here.

• Never put a lit candle on or near the seat, the jhula, the backdrop or the floor.
• Use high, stable tables away from drapes: the gift table, a console by the door, the dining table.
• Keep them unlit during the main rituals, when people crowd around her. Light them for the evening photos or the meal, with one adult in charge.
• Unscented only. Pregnant women are often sensitive to smells. Our candles here carry no fragrance.
• If any doubt remains, use them as unlit decor. They look finished either way.

Delivery timing for a function date

• Unpack on arrival: breakage reported within 24 hours of delivery is replaced or refunded.

When candles are lit: trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave them unattended, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
