A coffee table and a shelf want different candles. People sit around a coffee table and talk across it, so the candle should be low and wide. A shelf is seen from the front and from a distance, so it needs a mix of heights and a strong shape that reads from across the room.

Five rules for styling candles on a table or shelf

1. Group in odd numbers. Three or five pieces look arranged; two or four look like a pair waiting for a third. (The braided set of four works because it sits as one circle on a tray.)
2. Use a tray on the coffee table. It protects the surface, collects wax and makes small items look like one composition.
3. Mix heights on a shelf. One tall spiral, one medium sculpted piece, one low heart.
4. Repeat one colour. If your cushions are dusty pink, pick the pink heart and the rose peony, and let the rest stay neutral.
5. Leave space around a candle you will light. At least a hand's width from books, plants and the shelf above.

Lighting it where it sits

Only light a candle on a heat-proof tray or holder, away from books and curtains. Trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave it unattended, and burn for no more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
