Two kinds of shell candle: seaside and shankh

A "shell candle" means one of two things in India: a seashell candle for beachy home decor, or a shankh (conch) candle for the mandir. We make both, hand-poured in pure soy wax in Jalandhar:

• Seashell Candles: Rs 899 for a pair. Two conch-shell vessels, one sky blue and one sand beige, filled with soy wax and topped with pink wax shells, pearls and gold stars.
• Marble Seashell Candles: Rs 999 for a pair. Two marbled conch-shell vessels, one blue-and-white and one terracotta-and-white, with the same pink shells, pearls and gold stars on top.
• Shankh Candle: Rs 799. A cream and caramel shankh vessel filled with gold-flecked soy wax and decorated with pink lotus blooms and a green lily pad.

Seashell or shankh: decide by where it goes

Seashell vs marble seashell

Both pairs share the same shell shape and the same toppers. The difference is the finish:

• Seashell Candles (Rs 899) have smooth, solid pastel shells. They suit lighter rooms and look soft and calm. Pick these for a bathroom, a bedroom or a beach-house mood.
• Marble Seashell Candles (Rs 999) have a marbled finish, so each piece looks a bit different and a bit heavier, like stone. They hold their own on a dark wood table or in a room with more colour. At Rs 999 they also cross the free shipping line on their own.

If you are gifting and cannot choose, the marble pair is the more "grown-up" gift; the plain pair is the softer one.

Why a shankh candle for the mandir

The shankh is blown at the start of many poojas and is linked with Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, so a conch shape belongs naturally in the mandir. Our Shankh Candle brings that with lotus blooms on top, the other symbol of Lakshmi. For Diwali, place it in front of the idols on a metal plate, with simple diyas around it. Styling shell candles

• On a tray: put a pair of seashells on a white or wooden tray with a few real shells or a little sand. Do not put loose sand near a lit wick.
• In the bathroom: a seashell pair on a shelf beside folded towels is the classic spa look. Keep them unlit if the bathroom is small and damp.
• On a console with books: one marble seashell on each side of a stack of books.

• Real seashells filled with wax (actual shells from the beach): craft sellers and marketplaces offer these; ours are shaped vessels, not natural shells.
• Ocean or sea-breeze scented shell candles: a home fragrance brand. Our shell candles are decorative and have no fragrance listed.
• Floating shell candles for a water bowl: home decor stores. Ours are not made to float.
• A real shankh for blowing during pooja: a pooja samagri shop.

Safety: Shell candles online in India

Shell candles have decorations near the top, so keep them on a heat-proof plate, trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave them lit and unattended, and do not burn them for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
