The word to look for is pure or 100%. "Soy" on its own often means a soy blend, which can contain paraffin or other waxes. These are the sellers worth a look, and what each suits:

Four checks on any "soy candle" listing

1. The exact wax words on the product page. "100% soy wax" or "pure soy wax" is a claim the seller can be held to. "Soy-based", "natural wax" or "eco wax" may be a blend.
2. Where it is made. A named town or workshop is easier to trust than an unnamed supplier.
3. What else is in the candle. Colour, gold flakes, dried flowers and fragrance are common additions. They do not stop it being a soy candle, but they should be listed.
4. Whether the seller answers questions. Message them and ask. A small maker should reply with a straight answer.

Why people pay more for pure soy

Buyers usually want pure soy because it is a plant wax, and because they would rather know exactly what they are lighting at home. It is not magic: any candle, soy or paraffin, will smoke if the wick is too long or the candle sits in a draught. Trim the wick to about 5 mm and keep it out of moving air, and a good soy candle burns cleanly.
