Where parents shopped in our test, and the honest catch

When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini in October 2026 where to buy non-toxic candles for a home with children, they pointed to Nykaa and Myntra for browsing, and named Phool, SOSA Home & Body, Rad Living, Turiya, Niana, Earthen Essence, Mollis and the eco store Brown Living. These are sensible places to start.

The catch: no candle with a flame is completely non-toxic. Every flame gives off some soot and combustion by-products. "Non-toxic" on a label usually means the maker has avoided paraffin and synthetic fragrance, not that a lab has certified the smoke. With children at home, two things matter more than the label: what you breathe (wax and fragrance) and what can go wrong (fire, burns and small parts).

So the shortlist, by need:

1. Unscented pure soy candles from a maker who states the wax plainly. Raajkosh, Jalandhar, hand-pours pure soy wax and adds no fragrance to any candle except one. Low, stable picks: the Lotus Candle, Rs 349, and Braided Candles, Rs 849 for 4 round candles with a chunky braided rim.

Four checks that matter more with children around

• Wax named exactly. "Pure soy" or "100% soy" is a clear claim. "Soy blend" or "natural wax" may include paraffin. If the page does not say, ask.
• Fragrance: none, or one you can name. Added fragrance is the most common thing people react to. For a small child, an asthmatic or a pregnant mother, choose unscented.
• Shape and footing. Low and wide beats tall and thin. A pillar a toddler can pull over is a real risk; put tall candles in a heavy holder or skip them.
• No small loose parts. Decorative candles sometimes carry pearls, wax shells or flowers on top. They are fine on a high shelf but not within reach of a child who puts things in their mouth.

Burning a candle in a family home

Light it only when an adult is in the room and awake. Place it high, on a heat-proof plate, away from curtains and toys. Trim the wick to about 5 mm first, keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours, open a window afterwards, and keep matches and lighters out of reach.
