What makes a gift right for 1 January

New Year is not Diwali. Nobody expects a big box, and most people you meet on 1 January have just finished a month of Christmas parties and year-end dinners. The gifts that land well are small, meant for the months ahead, and easy to carry to someone's door. A candle fits that brief: it gets used on the cold evenings of January and February, it does not go off like sweets, and it says "a fresh start" without a card spelling it out.

• Rs 999 and above: shipping is free. Vanilla Reverie with the Braided Candles comes to Rs 1,398; the spiral set with Vanilla Reverie is Rs 1,348.

Buying for a whole list? Three singles plus the spiral set, or five gifts in one order, usually crosses Rs 999 and ships free to one address. You then hand them out yourself.

Wrapping it as a New Year present, not a leftover Christmas one

• Change the colours. Red and green paper says Christmas. Use white, gold or a plain kraft wrap with a ribbon in one of the candle colours.
• Write the year on the tag. "For 2027" in your own hand turns a candle into a New Year gift. You can add gift packaging and a gift note on the product page.
• Hand it over before the clock strikes, or on the 1st itself. A gift at the countdown party gets lost; one at the door on New Year's Day gets opened.

Getting the parcel there before New Year's Day

New Year falls on a Friday this time, a week after Christmas, and courier lanes are busy all December. We dispatch in 24 to 48 hours; delivery takes 2 to 7 days after dispatch, anywhere in India. Order in early or mid December and check the estimate for your pincode on the product page. We cannot promise a date.

Payment is prepaid only (UPI, card, net banking or wallet through Razorpay); there is no cash on delivery. Shipping is free from Rs 999 and Rs 79 below. Request a return within 24 hours of delivery; damage reported in that window is replaced or refunded.

If you light one at the countdown, keep it away from streamers and balloons, never leave it unattended, trim the wick to about 5 mm and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
