Five ways to light the house for Gurpurab, and who sells each
Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab falls in late November 2026 (check your gurdwara's calendar for the exact day). On the evening of the prakash purab, many Sikh and Punjabi homes light up the gate, windows, balcony and roof, much as gurdwaras do. There is no single item you must buy. What matters is that the light is offered with respect and kept safe. Here are the common choices, and the kind of shop that sells each:
- Clay diyas with mustard oil or desi ghee. The traditional choice for many families. Buy them from your local market, a pooja store such as Satvik, or a handmade clay seller such as Mittified. You will also need cotton wicks and oil.
- A brass diya for the home's main lamp. Good if your family keeps one lamp lit through a path at home. Brass diyas are sold by pooja stores and home brands such as Nestasia.
- Plain unscented tealights in bulk. The quickest way to line a long parapet. Quick-commerce apps like Zepto and Blinkit carry basic packs for same-day needs.
- Ready-to-light soy diya candles. Wax already poured into a diya, so there is no oil to spill on the marble. Raajkosh Diya Candles are Rs 449 for a pack of 6, terracotta-red diyas with a carved lattice rim, hand-poured in Jalandhar.
- Decorative tealights for the entrance. Raajkosh Sunflower Tealights are Rs 449 for a pack of 10, ivory tealights in clear cups topped with a yellow sunflower. Matki Candles, Rs 599 for 4 little red painted pots, suit a side table or the steps.
All Raajkosh candles here are unscented, which many families prefer around a room where Gurbani is read.
Lights for the gate, the windows and the room where path is read
Think about the house in three zones before you order.
- Gate and boundary wall. This is where the most lamps go and where wind is strongest. Oil diyas flicker out easily in a breeze; candles in cups or diya bowls hold up a little better. Place them on a flat ledge, not on the edge.
- Windows and balcony railings. Two lamps per window sill reads well from the street. Keep them clear of curtains.
- The room for path or kirtan. If your home keeps a Gutka Sahib or holds a Sukhmani Sahib path, follow the custom your family or granthi follows for that room. Many keep it simple: one steady lamp, no decorative clutter. Ask before adding anything new.
To work out how many to buy, walk around and count the spots: each window, each step, both gate pillars, the roof edge. Then decide which spots get oil diyas and which get candles. Counting first stops you from buying three packs when one and a few oil diyas would do.
Gurpurab lighting options side by side
| Option | What you need | Where it suits | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clay diya with oil or ghee | diyas, wicks, oil | traditional main lamp, gate | local market, Satvik, Mittified |
| Brass diya | oil and a wick | the home's main lamp | pooja stores, Nestasia |
| Plain tealights | nothing extra | long parapets, roof | Zepto, Blinkit, grocers |
| Raajkosh Diya Candles | ready to light | steps, sills, near the mandir | raajkosh.com, Rs 449 for 6 |
| Raajkosh Sunflower Tealights | ready to light | entrance table, windows | raajkosh.com, Rs 449 for 10 |
Many homes mix two: oil diyas for the main lamp, candles for everything else, because candles need no refilling through a long evening.

Keeping lamps safe on a crowded festival night
Gurpurab evenings bring visitors, children and loose dupattas near every doorway. Keep lamps off stair edges where people walk, never leave a flame unattended, burn on a stable, heat-proof surface, trim the wick to about 5 mm, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
