Eco-friendly candles in India: what the label really means, and plant-based soy candles to buy
An eco-friendly candle starts with the wax: Raajkosh candles are pure soy wax, a plant-based wax, hand-poured in small batches in Jalandhar. For Diwali, Diya Candles are Rs 449 for six; many pieces come in vessels you can reuse.

Key takeaways
- The wax matters most: soy wax is plant-based, paraffin comes from petroleum
- Every Raajkosh candle is pure soy wax, hand-poured in Jalandhar
- No candle is zero-impact; we hold no eco certification and do not claim one
- Pick candles in vessels you can reuse: jars, urlis, matkis, diyas
- Diya Candles (Rs 449 for six) are a soy wax swap for paraffin at Diwali
Start with the wax
If you want a more eco-friendly candle, the single biggest thing to check is the wax. Most cheap candles are paraffin, which is made from petroleum. Soy wax is made from soybean oil, a plant crop that is grown again every season. Every Raajkosh candle is pure soy wax, hand-poured in small batches in our Jalandhar workshop.
A good place to start, especially before Diwali, is our Diya Candles: Rs 449 for a pack of 6 soy wax candles in terracotta-red diyas with a carved lattice rim.
Being honest about "eco-friendly"
"Eco-friendly" has no single legal definition for candles in India, so it is worth knowing what it can and cannot mean.
- What soy wax does change: the wax comes from a renewable plant source instead of petroleum.
- What no candle changes: every candle with a flame burns fuel and gives off some carbon dioxide and a little soot. A soy candle is a better choice of wax, not a zero-impact product.
- What we do not claim: we hold no eco certification, and we do not claim organic, non-GMO or carbon-neutral. If a seller makes those claims, ask to see the certificate.
Five checks for any eco-friendly candle
- The wax. Pure soy, beeswax or coconut wax, or a "soy blend"? A blend can contain a lot of paraffin. Ours is pure soy.
- The vessel. Can it be used again? A candle in a glass jar, a bowl or a pot leaves you something useful when it is finished.
- Buying less, but better. A candle you love and keep for months does less harm than ten cheap ones that end up in the bin.
- Where it is made. A candle made and shipped within India travels less than one imported from abroad. Ours is made in Jalandhar, Punjab.
- The dye and decoration. If you plan to compost or dispose of leftover wax, plain colours are simpler than glitter. Some of our pieces have gold flecks or flakes, so put leftovers in the dry waste.
Our candles with reusable vessels
| Candle | Vessel you keep | Pack | Price | Reuse it as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Reverie | amber glass jar with screw lid | 1 | Rs 549 | a jar for cotton buds, spices or a small plant |
| Urli Candles | two flower-shaped urli bowls with a gold rim | 2 | Rs 699 | small bowls for rings, keys or flower heads |
| Matki Candles | four little hand-painted red matki pots | 4 | Rs 599 | tiny planters for succulents, or pen holders |
| Diya Candles | six terracotta-red diyas | 6 | Rs 449 | diya holders for next year's tealights |
| Shankh Candle | a cream and caramel shankh vessel | 1 | Rs 799 | a mandir decor piece |
To clean a vessel when the candle is finished, put it in the freezer for an hour so the last wax pops out, then wash with warm soapy water.
A greener Diwali, without giving up the lights
Diwali is when most Indian homes buy the most candles. A few simple swaps help:
- Choose soy wax diya candles over paraffin ones for the house.
- Buy one good set and keep the diyas or matkis to reuse next year.
- Light fewer, better-placed lights: one row at the door and one in the mandir rather than every ledge.
- Skip crackers and let the lights be the celebration.
A Diwali pair that ships free: Diya Candles plus Matki Candles, Rs 449 + Rs 599 = Rs 1,048.
Honest alternatives
- Clay diyas with mustard oil or ghee are the most traditional low-waste light: a local potter's diya can be washed and reused for years. We do not sell plain clay diyas.
- Beeswax candles are another natural wax; specialist sellers and some organic stores stock them. We do not make beeswax candles.
- LED or solar lights avoid a flame entirely and suit outdoor balconies; electricals shops and marketplaces sell them.
