If you want candles that look good on a shelf even when they are not lit, that is our whole range. Every Raajkosh candle is hand-poured in pure soy wax in our Jalandhar workshop and shaped to be decor first: braids, spirals, seashells, lotus flowers, diyas, little matki pots and teddy bears. Prices start at Rs 179 for a single Spiral Pillar Candle and go up to Rs 999 for a pair of Marble Seashell Candles.

A good place to start for a living room is the Braided Candles: Rs 849 for a pack of 4 round candles with a chunky braided rim in pink, blue, butter yellow and peach.

Decorative candles work when they match the room, not when they are the fanciest thing in it. Our range falls into five looks:

How to make decorative candles look right

Group in odd numbers. Three or five candles of different heights look styled; two or four in a line look like a shop shelf. The Spiral Pillar set of five is built for this.

Use a tray. A wooden, brass or marble tray turns loose candles into one decor piece and catches any wax. Seashell and lotus shapes look best on a flat tray with nothing else around them.

Mix one shape with one colour. Too many shapes on one table look busy. Pick one shape (say, braided) and let the colours vary, or one colour (say, ivory) and let the shapes vary.

Think about light, not only shape. A shelf candle can stay unlit as decor. A dining table candle should be low so people can see each other. A window candle is seen from outside, so a row of small lights works better than one big one.

Keep festive pieces festive. Diya, matki and urli candles look best when you bring them out for Diwali, a wedding or a griha pravesh, then store them in their box. They feel special because they are not out all year.

Handmade, and what that means for you

Because each candle is hand-poured and finished by hand, small differences in colour shade or petal shape between two pieces are normal. If you are buying two of the same candle for a symmetrical mantel, expect them to match closely but not like machine-made copies.

Our candles are about shape and colour. The only one with a fragrance is Vanilla Reverie (Rs 549), in an amber glass jar.

When another shop is the better choice

• Large event decor (hundreds of candles for a wedding venue): a wholesale supplier will be cheaper per piece.
• Flameless decor for a child's room, a rented flat with strict rules or a place you cannot watch: LED candles from an electricals shop or marketplace.
• Wide scent ranges: a dedicated home fragrance brand.
• Touch and see before you buy: home decor stores in malls let you hold the candle first. We are online only, with no shop to visit.

We ship from Jalandhar to anywhere in India. Dispatch is in 24 to 48 hours and delivery takes 2 to 7 days after that; check the estimate for your pincode on the product page. Shipping is free on orders of Rs 999 or more and Rs 79 below. Payment is prepaid only, by UPI, card, net banking or wallet through Razorpay; there is no cash on delivery. You can add gift packaging and a note. If a candle arrives damaged, tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we will replace or refund it.

Safety: Decorative candles online in India

If you light a decorative candle, put it on a stable, heat-proof surface, trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave it unattended, and do not burn it for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
