Coloured candles in India: three mixed-colour soy candle sets, and how to pick a palette

Mixed-colour candle sets we make

When people search for coloured candles, most want more than one colour that already goes together. We make three sets like that, each hand-poured in pure soy wax in Jalandhar:

• Spiral Pillar Candles, set of 5: Rs 799. One each in ivory, pink, blue, yellow and navy. Tall twisted pillars. Singles are Rs 179 if you want just one shade.
• Braided Candles, pack of 4: Rs 849. Round candles with a braided rim in pink, blue, butter yellow and peach. The most pastel of the three.
• Heart Rope Candles, set of 4: Rs 999. Hearts with a rope-weave rim in taupe, butter yellow, sage green and dusty pink. Muted, earthy shades. Singles are Rs 279.

If you are after one particular colour rather than a mix, we have separate pages for pink candles and other single shades.

Three palettes, three different rooms

The sets look alike in a photo but sit very differently at home.

Bright and clear: the spiral set. Ivory, pink, blue, yellow and navy are clean, strong colours. Navy grounds the group, so it reads as decor for adults, not a child's party. Good on a dining table, a long console or a Christmas or New Year table.

Soft pastel: the braided pack. Pink, blue, butter yellow and peach are the colours of a cake table or a baby shower. Low and round, they sit well on a tray, a dressing table or a bedside shelf, and they make a cheerful gift.

Muted and earthy: the heart rope set. Taupe, butter yellow, sage and dusty pink suit beige sofas, cane, linen and plants. They look calm rather than festive, which makes them a good housewarming or couple's gift that will match most homes.

The sets compared

The heart rope set is Rs 999 on its own, which is exactly the free shipping line. The other two ship free once you add any small item, for example a Rs 179 spiral single or a Rs 249 Heart Bubble Candle.

Getting colour right on a shelf or table

• Pick one set, not two. Two different palettes on one table usually clash. Repeat one palette instead.
• Match one colour to the room. If your cushions are blue, the spiral or braided set will look planned; if your room is beige and green, the heart rope set will.
• Let one neutral breathe. In the spiral set, put the ivory candle in the middle. It makes the others look brighter.
• For festivals, add one warm accent. Next to diyas and marigold, the yellow spiral or the Sunflower Tealights (Rs 449 for 10) bring the colour together.

Other places to buy coloured candles

• A single exact colour in many sizes (say, a deep green pillar for a theme): home stores and large marketplaces stock solid-colour pillars and tapers. Check the wax type in the listing.
• Bright birthday or party candles: cake candles are a different product, sold at bakeries and party shops. We do not make them.
• Coloured scented candles: our coloured candles carry no added fragrance. Our only scented candle is Vanilla Reverie (Rs 549), in an amber jar. Scented-candle brands make coloured jars in many fragrances.
• Bulk coloured candles for an event or a shop: wholesale portals sell by the carton.

A safety note

Burn each candle on its own heat-proof plate, with space between them, away from curtains and fans. Trim the wick to about 5 mm first, never leave candles unattended, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours at most.
