A wax seal, explained in one paragraph

A wax seal is a coin-sized disc of coloured sealing wax, melted onto a surface and pressed with a stamp while it is soft. The stamp carries a mark, usually a monogram or a simple logo, so the hardened wax shows it in relief. On a corporate gift it closes something: the knot of a ribbon, the flap of an envelope holding the note card, or the lid of a box. The person receiving it has to break or lift the seal to open the gift, which is the whole point. It turns opening into a small ceremony, the way a letter from an old firm or a wedding card from a big family used to feel.

Is it worth it? Four honest tests

A wax seal is worth the effort when most of these are true:

1. The gift is opened by one person, in private. A client at home, a director in a cabin, a new partner. A seal is wasted on a giveaway grabbed from a table at a town hall.
2. Your mark is simple. A seal is small and the wax spreads, so a monogram, a single letter or a bold symbol reads well. A long wordmark or a logo with fine lines and small text does not.
3. The numbers are modest. Seals are usually applied one at a time, by hand. For 20 or 60 client gifts that is part of the charm; for many hundreds, ask whether a tag would serve as well.
4. The gift itself is worth the ceremony. A seal on a cheap item sets up a disappointment. On a handmade piece, the seal and the gift say the same thing.

Notice that a seal and a card work together. Many companies seal the envelope that holds the card, so the logo is on the seal and the words are inside.

When a seal is not the right call

Skip the seal if the order is a large team giveaway where speed matters more than ceremony, if your logo is detailed and will not read at seal size, or if the gift will travel loose in a goody bag where the seal can crack.
