The note matters more than the gift

A coworker who stayed late to fix your deck, covered your calls when you were ill, or taught you the system in your first month does not expect a present. That is exactly why a small one lands. The rule is simple: keep the gift modest so it does not create an obligation, and put the real thanks in a note that says what they did.
