The candle part of a self-care hamper, done properly

A self-care hamper usually holds bath salts, a face mask, herbal tea, a journal and a candle. The candle is often an afterthought tucked into the corner of the box. If you want that part to be good, build the hamper around candles and add the rest yourself.

An honest note on scent. Vanilla Reverie is our only scented candle: soft, warm vanilla in an amber glass jar with a black screw lid and gold flakes on the wax, Rs 549. Every other piece in our range is a shaped soy candle with no fragrance stated. If the person wants a shelf of aromatherapy scents, lavender, eucalyptus and the rest, a specialist scented candle brand is the better place.

The bath ledge. Two conch-shaped vessels, one sky blue and one sand beige, topped with pink wax shells and pearls, made for a bathroom ledge. Ten daisy tealights in their own clear cups line the edge of the tub or the window. The vanilla jar is the one scent in the room.

The reading corner. Four braided rounds in pastels for the side table, one ivory spiral, and the vanilla jar with its lid, which keeps dust off between evenings.

Our chest is only candles. Bath salts, body oils, sheet masks, herbal teas, a journal, a soft robe: a skincare brand, a tea shop or a bookshop does those far better than we could. Lighting candles in a bathroom or bedroom

Steam and small spaces call for care. Set candles on a stable, heat-proof surface away from towels, curtains and anything that can fall in. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each use, keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours, and never leave a candle burning alone, even for a quick shower.
