A bedroom needs a candle that is soft, not loud, that sits safely on a bedside table, and that you can cover and forget about. Our pick for that is the only scented candle we make: Vanilla Reverie, Rs 549. Vanilla-scented pure soy wax, hand-poured in Jalandhar into an amber glass jar with a black screw lid, with gold flakes on top.

We do not have a range of bedroom scents. If you want lavender, sandalwood or something fresh, you will need a fragrance-led brand, and we say where to look below.

What makes a scented candle right for a bedroom

A bedroom is small, closed and used for rest, so the rules are different from a living room:

• Gentle scents work better than strong ones. Vanilla, soft florals, light woods. Strong spice or citrus can feel heavy in a closed room with the AC on.
• A jar is safer than an open pillar. The flame sits inside the glass, away from bedsheets and curtains, and the wax does not drip.
• A lid helps. Close it after the candle cools and the jar stays clean.
• Smaller is fine. A single jar is enough for a normal Indian bedroom. A three-wick candle can be too much.
• Light it before, not during, sleep. Light it while you read or get ready, then put it out before you sleep. Never sleep with a candle burning.

Why vanilla for a bedroom

Vanilla is one of the easiest scents to live with. It is warm and slightly sweet, it does not fight with the smell of fresh laundry or a room freshener, and most people do not find it sharp. The amber glass also gives a warm, low light, which suits a bedroom at night better than a bright white candle.

Adding unscented candles for the look

If you want a candle-lit bedroom for a special evening, you do not need every candle to be scented. Mixing one scented jar with a few unscented shaped candles keeps the fragrance soft while giving you more light:

Where to look for other bedroom scents

• Home-fragrance brands offer lavender, chamomile, sandalwood and other "calming" ranges in jars. Pick one where the product page lists the wax and the jar size.
• Department stores and malls let you smell a candle before you buy, which matters for a room you sleep in.
• Reed diffusers give a steady, flame-free fragrance if you would rather not light anything in the bedroom. We do not make them.

Bedroom safety

Keep the jar on a hard, heat-proof surface, away from curtains, pillows and anything hanging over the bedside table. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each use, never leave the candle burning when you leave the room or fall asleep, and do not burn it for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
