Return gifts for elders at a religious function: respectful, easy to use, and safe for older hands

For elders, give something for their own pooja that is easy to handle: a shankh, a lotus or a diya set, or a shawl or dry fruits. Raajkosh's Shankh Candle (Rs 799), Lotus Candle (Rs 349) and Diya Candles (Rs 449 for 6) fit, with a safety check for anyone with weak eyesight.

What elders expect from a return gift after a puja

At a havan, a katha, a griha pravesh or a vrat udyapan, the elders in the family are often given a separate, slightly better return gift than the other guests. It is a gesture of respect, so the gift should be something they will use in their own pooja or keep in the mandir, not a gadget or a novelty. It also needs to be easy for older hands: light to carry home, simple to open, and safe if their eyesight or balance is not what it was.

Return gifts families give their elders

Asked in October 2026, ChatGPT and Gemini suggested brass diyas, premium dry fruits, pooja thali sets and traditional shawls or stoles, and named gold gifting stores, South Indian lamp sellers, pooja kit brands and decor stores. In general terms:

  1. A shawl or stole. Warm, respectful and used every winter. Probably the most traditional choice.
  2. Premium dry fruits. Welcome in every home; check for diabetes before you choose sweets.
  3. A brass diya or pooja thali. Lasts a lifetime; heavy to carry if the elder travels by bus or train.
  4. A pooja-shaped handmade candle. This is where Raajkosh fits, with soy wax candles hand-poured in Jalandhar, in forms elders recognise:
    • Shankh Candle, Rs 799: a cream and caramel shankh with pink wax lotuses, for the mandir shelf. It is a decorative candle, not a conch to blow.
    • Lotus Candle, Rs 349, in green and red or coral pink. The lotus is Lakshmi's flower.
    • Diya Candles, Rs 449 for six terracotta-red diyas that hold wax instead of oil, so there is no ghee to top up.
    • Urli Candles, Rs 699 for a gold-rimmed pair, for the eldest couple in the family.

A quick safety check before you give a candle to an elder

A flame is not right for everyone. Before choosing a candle for an elder, ask:

  • Do they still light a diya every day themselves? If yes, a wax diya is easier and cleaner than an oil one.
  • Is their eyesight or hand steady? If not, give the Shankh Candle or the Urli pair as a mandir decoration that does not need to be lit, or choose a shawl.
  • Do they live alone? A candle should never be left burning unattended. For an elder who lives alone and may forget, a non-flame gift is kinder.

Our longer note on this is are candles a good gift for older people.

Elders' gifts compared

Shop prices per piece, GST included. For an order of 10 or more, your quote confirms the final price per gift with tags and delivery.

Piece Use in their pooja Shop price If they should not light it
Lotus Candle beside the idol Rs 349 sits as a lotus by the idol
Diya Candles, 6 daily or festival lamps Rs 449 less suited; these are made to be lit
Urli Candles, pair mandir entrance Rs 699 a gold-rimmed decoration
Shankh Candle mandir shelf, decorative Rs 799 a shankh for the shelf

A Lotus Candle and a set of Diya Candles together come to Rs 798 at shop prices, a fuller gift for the eldest guests. Ten Shankh Candles for the elders of a large family come to Rs 7,990.

When an elder should get something else

If the elder no longer lights lamps at all, a shawl or dry fruits will be used and a candle will not. If they keep a brass-only mandir by tradition, a brass diya fits their custom better. And if the function is in a few days and the date cannot move, buy from a pooja shop nearby.

For anyone who lights theirs: a stable, heat-proof surface away from curtains and the idol's clothes, never unattended, trim the wick to about 5 mm and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
