Return gifts for baratis: what the bride's family gives the groom's side, packed beside the mithai

When the barat leaves, the bride's family sends each barati family home with mithai and a small gift. A set of six Diya Candles (Rs 449) or a Lotus Candle (Rs 349), shop prices, sits neatly beside the sweet box, with both families' names on the tag. 50 to 300 guests; quote at raajkosh.com/corporate.

The bidai gift for the barat

In many North Indian weddings, and certainly in Punjab where we make our candles, the bride's family does not let the barat leave empty-handed. Each barati family gets a box of mithai, often dry fruits, and sometimes a small gift or a shagun envelope. The gift is a mark of respect to the groom's side, so it should look good, be shubh, and travel well, since many baratis drive or fly home that night.

Raajkosh makes hand-poured soy wax return gifts for 50 to 300 guests, with names or initials on the tags, in your colours, delivered to your home or the venue. For a barat, a diya set or a lotus packed beside the mithai box is a simple, festive choice. Ask at raajkosh.com/corporate and choose "Wedding return gifts".

Who on the groom's side gets what

Barat gifting usually follows rank, and getting it right matters more than the price:

  1. Every barati family: mithai plus a Lotus Candle or a Diya Candles set. At shop prices, 50 families with Diya Candles come to Rs 22,450; 50 with a Lotus Candle, Rs 17,450.
  2. The groom's close relatives (mamas, chachas, bua, masi): a step up to the Matki Candles. 30 at shop price are Rs 17,970.
  3. The groom's parents and grandparents: the Urli Candles or the Shankh Candle, often given at the milni or when the bride leaves.

Tell us the count at each level and the quote returns pieces and a final price for each.

Packing it for the journey home

  • Boxes that stack. The barat often leaves late at night, in cars and buses. Ask in the enquiry for packing that stacks beside the sweet box; the quote confirms it.
  • Both families on the tag. "With love from the Sharma family" or both surnames, or the couple's initials. Names or initials go on every tag.
  • Hand them over with the mithai. One person from the bride's side at the door with the list, so no family is missed.
  • Outstation baratis. If some could not carry gifts back, we can deliver to a list of addresses after the wedding.
  • Count families, then add a margin. Barat numbers grow on the day. Ask the groom's side for a family count a week ahead, and order a few extra so nobody at the door is turned away with only a sweet box.

Other gifts the barat receives

Beyond mithai and dry fruits, bride's families give silver-coated coins, steel utensils, blankets or shawls for elders, suit pieces for the men at the milni, and cash shagun in envelopes. These are often bought from a local jeweller, a utensil shop or a cloth merchant. A candle does not replace them; it adds a light, festive piece to the sweet box for every family.
