Which wedding favours look good on a return gift table: shapes that line up, colours that read from a distance

Favours that look good on a table are identical, upright, and in one or two colours that read from across the hall. Raajkosh's Matki Candles (Rs 599 for 4), Spiral Pillar Candles (Rs 179 each) and Sunflower Tealights (Rs 449 for 10) line up neatly, with names or initials on the tags.

Key takeaways

  • Repetition, height and one or two colours make a table look planned
  • Tall pieces at the back, trays and pots in front
  • Turn name tags towards the guests; keep candles unlit on the table
  • Matki Candles Rs 599 for 4, Spiral Pillar Candles Rs 179 at shop prices
Four small red matki pot soy candles hand-painted with a green and yellow vine

What makes a favour look good laid out

A return gift table is seen from three metres away before anyone picks a box up. From that distance, guests read three things: repetition (dozens of the same object in rows), height (something upright catches the eye; flat packets disappear) and colour (one or two colours look planned, five look random). The favours that photograph well on a table are the ones that are identical, a little tall or sculptural, and in your wedding colours.

What looks bad: mixed items in plastic bags, anything that needs to lie flat, and boxes with no tag.

Favours that hold up on a table, by kind

Asked in October 2026, ChatGPT and Gemini suggested brass or antique pieces, embroidered potli bags, meenakari boxes, mini brass urlis, personalised dry fruit boxes, brass pooja sets, ceramic and stoneware sets and silver items, and named home decor stores. In general terms:

  1. Brass pieces and mini urlis. Shine under lights and look rich in rows; heavy to carry home.
  2. Potli bags. Colourful and soft, but they slump unless stood in a tray.
  3. Meenakari or printed boxes. Uniform and stackable; the box is the display.
  4. Dry fruit boxes with names. Neat if the boxes are rigid.
  5. Sculpted handmade candles. This is where Raajkosh fits, with soy wax candles hand-poured in Jalandhar that look like objects, not packets:
    • Matki Candles, Rs 599 for four red matki pots with a hand-painted vine. Set in rows of pots, they look like a mela stall.
    • Spiral Pillar Candles, Rs 179 each, twisted pillars in ivory, pink, blue, yellow or navy. Upright, and the easiest to alternate in two colours.
    • Urli Candles, Rs 699 for a gold-rimmed pair with yellow wax sunflowers, for close family.
    • Sunflower Tealights, Rs 449 for ten ivory tealights with wax sunflowers, laid out as a field on a tray.

Laying out the table

  • One piece, many times. Repetition does the work. Forty identical pieces look more generous than forty different ones.
  • Height at the back, small at the front. Spiral pillars or urli pairs behind, tealight trays or matki rows in front.
  • Two colours, alternating. Ivory and one wedding colour, in a checkerboard or stripes.
  • Tags facing out. If the tags carry names or initials, turn them to the guests. It is the detail they photograph.
  • A tray or runner under everything. It catches wax crumbs and keeps the lines straight.
  • Keep it unlit. A return gift table sits where guests crowd past in dupattas and sarees. Display candles unlit; put lit candles, if any, on a separate decor stand away from the exit.

When the table needs something else

If your hall is huge and the table is far from the lights, small candles can get lost; a big brass piece or a tall printed box reads better. If guests will take the gift on the way to a long drive, choose something unbreakable and light. If many guests are children, candles are the wrong favour for them. And if your date is close, buy locally rather than risk an empty table.

For guests who light theirs at home: never leave it unattended, burn it on a heat-proof surface and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
