Diya decoration ideas for home
The easiest diya decoration at home is the one you do not have to fill, paint or clean up after. Our soy wax diya candles come ready to place and light: Diya Candles are Rs 449 for a pack of 6 terracotta-red diyas with a carved lattice rim, Matki Candles are Rs 599 for 4 little red pots with a hand-painted vine border, and Urli Candles are Rs 699 for a pair of gold-rimmed flower bowls. All are hand-poured in Jalandhar.
Below are seven set-ups, each with exactly what to buy. This is a shopping list, not a craft tutorial: no glue gun, no painting, no oil.
1. The entrance threshold
The main door is where most families start. Place a row of diyas on both sides of your rangoli, or in a curve along its outer edge.
- Buy: one pack of Diya Candles (Rs 449) for a small doorway; two packs (Rs 898) for a wide door or both sides of a long rangoli.
- Tip: keep the diyas at least a hand's width from the rangoli colour and any toran or marigold string that hangs low.
2. The mandir or pooja corner
In the mandir, less is more. One special piece in front of the idols looks better than many small lights.
- Buy: the Shankh Candle (Rs 799), a cream and caramel conch vessel with pink lotus blooms and a green lily pad, or a Lotus Candle (Rs 349) for a smaller shelf.
- Tip: if your family custom asks for a ghee diya at aarti, keep that, and use the wax pieces for the rest of the evening.
3. The centre table urli
A flower urli is the classic living room piece for Diwali. Our Urli Candles do the same job without water or floating petals that wilt by morning.
- Buy: Urli Candles, Rs 699 for two. Place them on a brass or wooden tray with a few loose marigolds around.
4. Window sills and balcony ledges
A line of small lights along a window is what people see from the street.
- Buy: Sunflower Tealights (Rs 449 for 10, ivory tealights in clear cups with a yellow sunflower) or Daisy Tealights (Rs 449 for 10, mint and ivory or purple and ivory).
- Tip: only use open ledges where there is no curtain and the wind is low. On a windy balcony, keep lights inside a glass lantern.
5. Staircase steps
One light on the corner of each step looks lovely in photos but is the riskiest place in the house: people walk past fast, children run, saris and dupattas swing.
- Buy: Matki Candles (Rs 599 for 4) placed on every second step at the wall side only, never the open side.
6. The dining table for Diwali dinner
Keep the table light low so people can see each other across it.
- Buy: one pack of Matki Candles down the middle, or a mix of one pack of Diya Candles and one pack of Matki Candles (Rs 449 + Rs 599 = Rs 1,048), which also crosses the Rs 999 free shipping line.
7. A gift arrangement for parents or hosts
If you are visiting family, a ready diya set is a gift they will use the same night.
- Buy: Urli Candles (Rs 699) or the Shankh Candle (Rs 799), with gift packaging and a note added on the product page.
