Dhanteras gift ideas for your wife and family: keep the metal custom, and add light for the evening

On Dhanteras most families buy gold, silver, brass or steel by custom, and that should stay the main gift. A candle is an add-on for the Diwali evening, or a gift for someone who does not want more metal: our Lotus Candle (Rs 349) pairs well with a silver coin.

Key takeaways

  • Dhanteras is traditionally for buying gold, silver, brass or steel; keep that custom
  • A candle is an add-on for the evening pooja, or for someone who does not want metal
  • For your wife: Lotus Rs 349, Urli pair Rs 699 or Shankh Rs 799 next to her main gift
  • Site banner: "Order by 4 November for Diwali delivery"; not a Dhanteras-day promise
  • If delivery is tight, buy the metal locally and give the candle on Diwali

What Dhanteras is for, before you buy anything

Dhanteras opens the five days of Diwali. In 2026 it falls in the week before Diwali on Sunday 8 November; check your panchang for the exact day and the muhurat in your city. By tradition, families buy something in metal on Dhanteras: gold or silver jewellery, a silver coin with Lakshmi and Ganesh, a brass diya, or new steel utensils for the kitchen. Many also light a lamp at the main door in the evening, and offer prayers to Lakshmi and to Dhanvantari.

We are a candle brand, so we will be plain about this: a candle is not a Dhanteras purchase in the traditional sense. If your family buys metal on Dhanteras, buy the metal. Where our candles help is the evening itself, and the people on your list who do not want another coin or another steel set.

For your wife: the custom first, then something just for her

The main gift. Most wives expect the Dhanteras purchase to be jewellery, a silver coin or something for the home in silver or brass. Ask her what she wants; she may already have chosen it with the jeweller.

The add-on. Something small for the pooja she will do that evening, and that stays on the mandir through Diwali:

  • Shankh Candle, Rs 799: a cream and caramel shankh vessel with gold-flecked wax, pink lotus blooms and a green lily pad.
  • Urli Candles, Rs 699 for a pair: flower-shaped urli bowls with a gold rim and a yellow sunflower, which look right next to new silver.
  • Lotus Candle, Rs 349: a layered lotus, the flower of Lakshmi.

If she would rather have something only for herself, not for the mandir, see our guide to a Diwali gift for your wife, which covers that.

For the rest of the family

Who Traditional Dhanteras gift A light to go with it Cost of ours
Parents silver coin, brass diya, steel set Diya Candles, pack of 6 Rs 449
Mother-in-law silver item, brass pooja ware Shankh Candle Rs 799
Sister or bhabhi small jewellery, silver coin Lotus Candle Rs 349
A friend who does not do metal Matki Candles, pack of 4 Rs 599

Parents with a silver coin and a pack of Diya Candles is the simplest combination: the coin is the custom, and the diyas are lit the same evening.

How to choose, if you are adding a candle

  • For the mandir, pick no-fragrance and traditional shapes. Lotus, shankh, urli and diya. None of these has fragrance added.
  • Match the metal. Gold-rimmed urli and gold-flecked shankh look right next to new gold or brass. Terracotta diyas suit a steel or clay pooja thali.
  • Keep it small next to a big gift. If the main gift is jewellery, the candle is a touch, not a second present. The Rs 349 lotus is enough.

What else people buy and gift on Dhanteras

  • Gold and silver coins, the most common Dhanteras purchase.
  • Steel and brass utensils, especially for a new home or a newly married daughter.
  • A new broom, which many homes buy on this day for good luck.
  • Electronics and appliances, which many families now time to Dhanteras for the auspicious day and the festival sales.
  • Clay diyas from the market, for the lamp at the door.

Ordering in Diwali week

  • The site banner says "Order by 4 November for Diwali delivery". That is the store's cut-off for Diwali, not a promise for Dhanteras day.
  • We dispatch in 24 to 48 hours, and delivery takes 2 to 7 days after dispatch. Check the estimate for your pincode on the product page. If the candle may arrive after Dhanteras, buy the metal locally on the day and give the candle on Diwali.
  • Free shipping from Rs 999; Rs 79 below that. The Shankh Candle with the Lotus Candle comes to Rs 1,148 and ships free.
  • Prepaid only, by UPI, card, net banking or wallet through Razorpay. No cash on delivery.

On the mandir

Keep the candle on a metal plate, away from flowers and cloth, and never leave it burning unattended. Trim the wick to about 5 mm and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
