Tables, counters and shelves need different candles

A cafe or restaurant buys candles for three different places, and they should not be the same candle. Tables need something small, low and contained, because it sits beside food, menus, napkins and elbows. Counters and the billing desk want one or two pieces that look good to a customer standing in a queue, lit or not. Shelves, windows and washroom ledges want decor that photographs well and is rarely lit.

Where Indian cafes and restaurants buy, by kind:

• Hospitality and wholesale candle suppliers: built for hundreds of identical votives and pillars each month, with restocking. The right call for a chain or a high-volume dining room.
• LED candle suppliers: no flame at all, the answer for any space where open flames are not allowed or the tables are busy.
• Marketplaces: plain tealights in bulk packs, cheap and quick, with uneven quality.
• Local candle makers in your city: can sometimes match a colour and deliver by hand.

What we would put where, from our range

• Tables: Sunflower Tealights, Rs 449 for ten ivory tealights in clear cups, each topped with a small yellow wax sunflower; or Daisy Tealights, Rs 449 for ten in mint and ivory or purple and ivory. The cup holds the melted wax, which matters on a table. Set each in a glass or metal holder.
• Counter or billing desk: the Floral Candle Duo, Rs 649 for two peony candles in rose pink and ivory, or a few Spiral Pillar Candles at Rs 179 each in a holder. Many cafes keep these unlit as decor.
• Shelves and the washroom ledge: Marble Seashell Candles, Rs 999 for two marbled conch vessels, which look like decor first.

All our candles are hand-poured in pure soy wax. Only one, Vanilla Reverie, is scented; the rest carry no stated fragrance, which suits a dining room where scent would compete with the food.

On safety at a restaurant table

We do not hold any hospitality or commercial safety certification, and we will not tell you a candle is safe for your tables. That decision sits with you and your local rules. What we can say plainly: use tealights in cups inside a holder, keep them away from napkins and menus, never leave a lit candle where no one is watching, burn on a stable, heat-proof surface, trim the wick to about 5 mm, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours. If your building or fire rules do not allow open flames, use LED candles on the tables and keep our pieces as unlit decor.
