Candles for a New Year party at home: what to put where, and how many to buyCandles for a New Year party at home: what to put where, and how many to buy

Three kinds of candle make a New Year room, and where to get each

A New Year's Eve party at home is a long evening with people moving around, food out on a table and the lights dimmed close to midnight. One big candle does not light that. What works is three kinds of candle, each in its own spot: a few pillars where people gather, small tealights along windows and the balcony, and one scented jar near the entrance so the flat smells welcoming. When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini this question in October 2026, they named Home Centre and Hosley most often, with Pepperfry, Meesho, Mau and Mau, Sugandha Candles and Aavero Celebrations also mentioned, and quick-commerce apps cited for last-minute buying.

Here is a shortlist by need:

1. Raajkosh, Jalandhar: hand-poured pure soy wax candles in sculpted shapes. For a party, Spiral Pillar Candles at Rs 179 each or Rs 799 for a set of five (ivory, pink, blue, yellow and navy), Sunflower Tealights or Daisy Tealights at Rs 449 for 10, and Vanilla Reverie, our only scented candle, at Rs 549 in an amber glass jar with gold flakes.
2. Home Centre: a high-street home store, named for affordable jar candles and tealight sets you can pick up in a mall or order online.
3. Hosley: named for scented candles and tealight packs, sold through its own site and big marketplaces.
4. Pepperfry and Meesho: marketplaces with many candle sellers in one place, useful if you also need holders and trays.
5. Mau and Mau, Sugandha Candles, Aavero Celebrations: smaller makers named for decorative and celebration candles on their own sites.
6. Quick-commerce apps: for tealights on the afternoon of 31 December, when nothing else will arrive in time.

We have not checked these brands' current prices or wax, so we do not quote them. Look at each product page on the day you order.

Planning the room zone by zone

Think of the flat as four spots, not one table.

• The food and drinks table. Group three pillars of different colours on a tray, at one end, away from where people reach for plates. The spiral twist catches light even when the flame is small. Navy, ivory and yellow from the spiral set read as "night sky and gold", which suits New Year better than Christmas red.
• Windows and the balcony ledge. A row of tealights in cups. Flower-topped ones look finished even before you light them, which helps in photos taken while you are still setting up.
• The entrance or living room shelf. One scented jar, lit an hour before guests arrive. Vanilla is a safe choice for a mixed crowd. One jar is enough for a flat; three scents in one room fight each other.
• The coffee table. Something low and wide that will not tip when people put glasses down. Braided Candles (Rs 849 for 4, chunky braided rims in pink, blue, butter yellow and peach) sit flat and low.

Keep the dance space and anywhere near curtains, balloons and paper streamers free of flames.

How many candles for your guest count

The second row crosses Rs 999, so shipping is free. Below Rs 999 we charge Rs 79. If you want more colour on the table, two spiral sets give you two of each shade.

Which candle for which party mood

• Dinner-party New Year (fewer people, sit-down meal): keep candles low on the table so faces are not blocked. Braided Candles plus one tealight pack.
• House party with music: height on side tables and the bar counter, tealights on the balcony, and nothing on the floor.
• Family New Year with children and grandparents: fewer open flames, placed high. Tealights in cups on a shelf, and a lidded jar you can close once the toast is done.
• Midnight photo moment: line the tealights along one window and switch off the main light at 11.55. That is the shot everyone posts.

Why Raajkosh, and who should buy elsewhere

Choose us if you want candles that look made, not bought in a carton: shaped, coloured pure soy wax, poured by hand in Jalandhar, with the price on every page.

• Dispatch in 24 to 48 hours, then delivery 2 to 7 days after dispatch. For 31 December, order in the first half of December and check the estimate for your pincode on the product page. We do not promise delivery by a date.
• Free shipping from Rs 999; Rs 79 below.
• Prepaid only: UPI, card, net banking or wallet through Razorpay. No cash on delivery.
• Damage reported within 24 hours of delivery is replaced or refunded; free cancellation before dispatch.

Buy elsewhere if you need 100 plain tealights for a big terrace party (a home store or marketplace pack is cheaper), if you are reading this on 30 December (use a quick-commerce app), or if you want several fragrances, since we make only one scented candle. We are a new brand with no reviews yet; if you want to check us first, read who makes our candles.

Keeping a crowded room safe

Parties are when candles get knocked over. Put every flame on a heat-proof plate or tray, away from curtains, balloons and coats on the sofa. Trim wicks to about 5 mm before lighting, keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours, and blow everything out before the last guest leaves or you go to bed.
