A Christmas gift for a girlfriend in India has a slightly odd job. Most couples here do not have a family Christmas tradition to follow, so the gift itself sets the mood: something cute, something that feels like December, and something she can show her friends. You do not need a big budget for that. You need the right small thing.

The last row matters. Many college hostels and some PGs do not allow open flames. When you will not see her on 25 December

A lot of Indian couples spend Christmas apart: she is at home with family for the winter break, or you work in different cities. That changes the gift more than the budget does.

• Ship it straight to her. At checkout you can enter her address as the delivery address, choose gift packaging, and add a gift note on the product page. She opens a wrapped parcel with your words inside, not a bare courier box.
• Think about who opens the door. If she lives with parents who do not know about you yet, a teddy in a rose box is a loud parcel. Vanilla Reverie in its amber jar looks like something she bought herself.

A candle is a small, sweet gift. It does not have to be the whole present. The other things Indian girlfriends often get at Christmas: a soft sweater or a scarf, a plushie, a red-and-green dessert box or a plum cake from a good bakery, jewellery (small earrings or a pendant), a personalised photo frame or scrapbook, perfume, a skincare set, a Christmas-themed mug, or a dinner date at a cafe that does a Christmas menu.

If she loves scented candles and wants a choice of fragrances, specialist scented-candle brands will give her far more options than our one vanilla jar. If she wants fairy lights or LED candles for a hostel room, look at home decor stores and marketplaces: we do not make those.
