Light them where staff can see, decorate where guests sleep

The simple rule for a hotel, a boutique stay or a homestay: light candles only in places staff can watch, such as the reception, the lobby table, a restaurant entrance, the evening at a pool deck. In guest rooms, a candle is decor, not a flame. Many properties do not allow open flames in rooms at all, and a guest lighting one by the curtains is a risk you do not need. Pick room pieces that look finished unlit, or leave them out.

When one is lit: never leave it unattended, burn it on a stable, heat-proof surface, trim the wick to about 5 mm, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
