Candles as corporate gifts in offices that ban open flames: give them to take home, keep them unlit as decor, or choose another gift
Yes, if the candle goes home. A no-flame rule covers lighting at work, not owning a gift. Hand it out to take home, or choose a shaped piece like the Raajkosh Matki Candles (Rs 599, shop price) that looks finished unlit. Where people live on site or cannot light one at home either, choose a different gift.

Key takeaways
- A no-flame rule covers lighting at work; a candle gift taken or sent home is usually fine.
- Shaped pieces like matkis and a shankh can stay at work as unlit decor, if the note says so.
- Choose another gift where staff live on site, flammable materials are handled, or candles are barred from the premises.
- Raajkosh delivers to every home address across India, from 10 gifts, with a GST invoice.
Three ways to handle a no-flame rule
Many Indian offices, especially in high-rise towers, IT parks, hospitals, labs and factories, do not allow open flames on the premises. That does not automatically rule out a candle as a gift. There are three sensible ways to handle it:
- Give it to take home. The rule is about lighting a flame at work. Hand the gift out boxed on the last day before the festival, or deliver it to home addresses, and it never needs to be lit in the office.
- Keep it unlit at work, as decor. Shaped candles such as matkis, a shankh or a teddy look finished without a flame. On a desk they are an ornament, as long as everyone understands they stay unlit.
- Choose a different gift. If people live on site, in hostels or staff quarters with the same rule, or your safety team would rather not see candles on the floor at all, pick something else.
Ask your admin or facilities team which of these your building allows before you order.
A gift that goes home is not the same as office decor
The confusion usually comes from mixing two things. Office decor for Diwali, such as diyas at reception, falls under the building's fire rules, and in a no-flame building that means electric lights or unlit pieces. A gift is the employee's own property once it leaves the office, and most people light candles at home on Diwali anyway. So the practical question is not whether candles are allowed in the office, but whether the gift will be lit there.
For office decoration itself, our Diwali decor shopping list for offices covers the no-flame case.
When the candle should stay unlit
Some pieces are better kept as decor at work, even by people who could light them at home:
- Desk pieces in open-plan floors. Paper, files and screens are close together.
- Shared cabins and meeting rooms, where no one person is watching.
- Reception displays, which are left alone after hours.
If you want people to keep the gift at work, choose a shape that reads as an ornament and say on the note card that it is meant to stay unlit in the office.
Workplaces where a candle gift does not belong
Be honest with yourself here. Choose something other than a candle when:
- Employees live on site, in staff quarters, hostels or PGs with their own no-flame rules.
- The site handles flammable materials, such as chemical plants, fuel depots or some labs, where even carrying candles in may be discouraged.
- Your safety policy forbids bringing candles onto the premises at all, not only lighting them.
- Gifts will be handed out at work and stored there for days before people take them home.
In these cases, dry fruits, a plant, a voucher or a useful non-flame item is the better call. We would rather you choose another supplier than send a gift your team cannot use.
Gift options by workplace rule
| Your rule | Candle as a gift? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No lighting at work, homes are normal | yes | deliver to homes, or hand out boxed to take home |
| No lighting at work, staff want desk decor | yes, unlit | choose a shaped piece and say it stays unlit |
| No candles on the premises at all | no, unless sent to homes | ship straight to home addresses |
| Staff live on site under the same rule | no | choose another gift |
| Flammable materials on site | no | choose another gift |
Pieces that look finished without a flame
Shop prices today, per piece. Your quote confirms the final price per gift with branding and delivery.
- Matki Candles, Rs 599: four little red matki pots hand-painted with a vine. They read as a set of ornaments on a shelf.
- Shankh Candle, Rs 799: a shankh-shaped vessel with wax lotus blooms, made for display.
- Teddy Gift Candle, Rs 599: a teddy in a rose gift box, all wax.
- Marble Seashell Candles, Rs 999: two marbled shells for a cabin or a home bathroom shelf.
- Diya Candles, Rs 449: six wax diyas, best sent home for Diwali night rather than kept at a desk.
All are pure soy wax, hand-poured in Jalandhar. Only Vanilla Reverie in our range is scented, so the pieces above do not add a fragrance to a shared floor.
Safety lines worth printing on the note card
For the people who will light the gift at home: never leave a burning candle unattended, trim the wick to about 5 mm before every use, burn it on a stable, heat-proof surface, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
Ordering for a team with a flame rule
