Welcome kit items new employees actually keep, the ones that end up in a drawer, and how to tell the difference

New employees keep the welcome kit items they use every day or put on display: a good bottle, a notebook worth writing in, a bag that fits a laptop, and one well-made object for home. They throw away cheap gadgets, flimsy pens and anything with an oversized logo. A small handmade piece such as the Raajkosh Blossom Candle (Rs 299) or Floral Candle Duo (Rs 649) is kept because it is decor first.

Key takeaways

  • Joiners keep what they use daily or would display: a bottle, a good notebook, a bag, one home piece.
  • Cheap gadgets, keychains, flimsy pens and value booklets are usually thrown away.
  • Test each item: would they buy it, will it last six months, is the logo small enough?
  • A decorative handmade piece outlasts a gadget; Raajkosh Blossom Candle is Rs 299 shop price.

What survives the first month, and what does not

Ask anyone who has joined a few companies what they still have from each welcome kit, and the answers are consistent. The items that survive are either used every day or good enough to display. Everything else goes into a drawer, then a bin.

Usually kept:

  1. A good insulated bottle. Used daily, so the logo travels with it.
  2. A notebook worth writing in, with decent paper and a firm cover.
  3. A laptop bag or sleeve that actually fits.
  4. A hoodie or t-shirt, but only in the right size and a plain design.
  5. One well-made object for home or the desk: a plant, a small craft piece, a handmade candle. From Raajkosh: the Blossom Candle at Rs 299, the Floral Candle Duo, two sculpted peonies, at Rs 649.

Usually thrown away: cheap earphones and power banks, keychains, stress balls, flimsy branded pens, stickers, and printed booklets about company values.

The three-question keep test

Before an item goes into the kit, run it past three questions:

Question If yes If no
Would the joiner buy this for themselves? It will be kept It is filler
Will it still work, or still look good, in six months? Kept Binned when it breaks
Is the logo small enough that they would use it outside work? Used at home too Left at the office or hidden

An item that fails two of the three should come out. The money is better spent making the remaining items better.

Why a decorative piece outlasts a gadget

A gadget is judged on performance, and a cheap one fails. A decorative handmade piece is judged on how it looks, and it keeps looking the same. That is why a small candle ends up on a shelf in a new flat long after the branded pen is gone. Our pieces are sculpted to be decor first: the Blossom Candle is ringed with hand-set wax blossoms; the Floral Candle Duo reads as two flowers before it reads as a candle; the Spiral Pillar Candle (Rs 179) catches the light unlit.

The logo goes on the tag, the note card or a wax seal, not on the piece. So the item itself carries nothing a joiner would want to hide.

When a candle will not be kept either

A candle is a home item, not a work item. Leave it out of kits for joiners living in shared hostel rooms, for site and factory teams, and for offices that ban open flames when the kit is opened at work. It is also the wrong item if HR wants every piece in the kit to carry a printed logo.

Adding a keeper to your kit

We supply the home piece, not the full kit. Corporate orders start at 10 gifts with no minimum order value, so a monthly joining batch fits. Your logo goes on the tag, note card or a wax seal; you get a GST invoice in your company's name; we deliver to one office or each joiner's home across India; orders are prepaid as set out in the quote. Branded gifts cannot be returned unless damaged, defective or wrong. Full terms: Raajkosh corporate gifting.
