Gift for your uncle: what to give chacha, mama, mausa or phupha, and why most uncles prefer one plain thing
Most Indian uncles want one plain, good thing rather than something cute. For chacha's or mama's home, Vanilla Reverie (Rs 549), a vanilla candle in an amber jar, or the Shankh Candle (Rs 799) for a tauji who leads the family aarti.

Key takeaways
- Most Indian uncles want one plain, good thing, not something cute.
- Shankh Candle (Rs 799) for an uncle who leads the aarti; Vanilla Reverie (Rs 549) for his evening chair.
- A single Spiral Pillar (Rs 179) is a correct gift for an uncle by marriage.
- If he wants a kurta, dry fruits or a match ticket, buy that instead.
Uncles are the hardest people to buy for
Chacha, tauji, mama, mausa, phupha: five uncles, and most of them will tell you not to waste money. In most families, Indian uncles accept a gift most happily when it is one plain, good thing, not a cute object, not a gadget they will not set up, not clothing in a size someone guessed. A gift for the house he is proud of, or for the routine he keeps, works best.
Raajkosh hand-pours soy wax candles in Jalandhar. Here is what we would give an uncle, and when we would not.
Five uncles, five gifts
| For | Gift | Pack | Shop price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tauji, who leads the family aarti | Shankh Candle: a cream and caramel conch with pink wax lotuses | 1 candle | Rs 799 |
| Chacha, in the joint family house | Diya Candles: six wax diyas for the house mandir, no oil to top up | 6 candles | Rs 449 |
| Mama, who sits with the newspaper every evening | Vanilla Reverie: warm vanilla in an amber jar; our only scented candle | 1 jar | Rs 549 |
| Mausa or phupha, a relative by marriage | Spiral Pillar Candles, single ivory or navy: correct, not personal | 1 candle | Rs 179 |
| The uncle who has everything | Seashell Candles: two conch shells, sky blue and sand beige, for his drawing room | 2 candles | Rs 899 |
Vanilla Reverie with the Shankh Candle is Rs 1,348 and ships free (free shipping starts at Rs 999). Vanilla Reverie with a single Spiral Pillar is Rs 728, plus Rs 79 shipping.
When a candle is the wrong gift for him
We make candles, so take this seriously: if your uncle is the kind who wants a good bottle, a cricket match ticket, a kurta from his usual shop, a power bank or dry fruits, buy that. A candle suits the uncle with a mandir he tends, a drawing room he is proud of, or a habit of an evening chair. If he is elderly with weak eyesight, give it as decor, unlit.
Gifts when you visit, and gifts when you cannot
When you visit: order to your own address a few days ahead and carry it. In most families, the gift for chacha or mama is handed over along with the mithai box when you arrive.
When you cannot: we deliver across India, so you can send it to his home with a note. Put the phone number of whoever answers the door; it may be his son or a helper.
For an uncle's milestone
- Retirement: a gift for the home he will now spend his days in. We have a page on retirement gifts that are not a watch or a plaque.
- His 60th or 75th birthday: the Shankh Candle, with a note from every nephew and niece.
- A new house: Diya Candles for the first puja.
- His and aunty's anniversary: one gift for both of them, for their home.
Words for the gift note
Uncles are rarely sentimental out loud, and many will be embarrassed by a long message. Keep it short:
- "Chacha, for the mandir. Happy birthday."
- "Mama ji, for the evening newspaper hour."
- From all the cousins: "From the whole next generation, who still remember your scooter rides."
To put his name or "Chacha ji" on the tag itself, a custom enquiry on our custom orders page does that. We reply with what is possible, a timeline and a price.
Paying and returns for an uncle's gift
Shop orders dispatch in 24 to 48 hours and arrive 2 to 7 days after dispatch; we never promise a date, so order early and check the delivery estimate for the pincode on the product page. Prepaid only (UPI, card, net banking or wallet); there is no cash on delivery, so he is never asked to pay at the door. Optional gift packaging and a gift note are on the product page. Shop orders can be returned on a request within 24 hours of delivery.
If he lights it: a stable, heat-proof surface, never unattended, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
