A diya is one of the few gifts every Indian home will use, and a wax-filled diya is ready to light the moment it is unwrapped: no oil, no cotton wicks to roll. Our picks to gift, all hand-poured in pure soy wax in Jalandhar:

• Diya Candles: six soy wax candles in terracotta-red diyas with a carved lattice rim, Rs 449. The classic diya gift.
• Urli Candles: a pair of flower-shaped urli bowls with a gold rim, gold-flecked wax and a sunflower on top, Rs 699. A bigger, more festive gift.
• Shankh Candle: a cream and caramel conch vessel with gold-flecked wax and pink lotus blooms, Rs 799. For parents or elders with a mandir at home.

Making a diya gift set

A single item can feel small. Two pieces together make a proper set, and from Rs 999 the order ships free:

• The pooja set: Shankh Candle with Diya Candles, Rs 1,248. Shankh for the centre, diyas around it.
• The doorway set: Urli Candles with Diya Candles, Rs 1,148. Urlis on either side, diyas on the steps.
• The simple set: two packs of Diya Candles, Rs 898, split into two gifts of six, or one gift of twelve.
• The lotus set: Lotus Candle with Diya Candles, Rs 798. A lotus for the thali and diyas for the rest.

Why a wax diya makes a better gift than oil and wick

• No mess. The person does not need ghee, oil or cotton batti.
• Safer to carry. No oil to spill in a gift box.
• Looks good unlit. The carved rim and colour make the box look festive when it is opened.
• Soy wax. Pure soy wax is a plant wax, not paraffin.

If the family prefers the ritual of oil and a cotton wick, a plain clay diya set is the more traditional gift. Our diyas are wax-filled.

Fragrance

Our diyas and festive candles have no fragrance added, which suits a mandir where dhoop or agarbatti is lit. The only scented candle we make is Vanilla Reverie, Rs 549, if you want to add a fragrance to the gift.

A safety note to pass on

Light diyas on a heat-proof surface away from curtains, rangoli powder and children's clothes. Trim the wick to about 5 mm, never leave them burning unattended, and do not burn them more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
