Five filters that keep a team gift inclusive

A diverse team in an Indian office can mean Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jain and non-religious colleagues, men and women from 22 to 60, vegetarians, people who fast, people who do not drink, and people from five states who celebrate different festivals. The safest corporate gift passes five filters:

1. No food. Sweets and dry fruit raise questions of veg, Jain, halal, sugar and allergies, and they are gone in a week.
2. No alcohol and nothing that looks like a bar accessory.
3. No religious symbol unless the gift is for a festival the whole team marks. A diya or a lotus is lovely at Diwali for a team that celebrates it, and the wrong choice for a year-end gift to everyone.
4. No strong scent. Fragrance is personal, and some people get headaches.
5. A neutral design that is not pink-for-women or black-for-men, and not too cute for a senior colleague.

The gifts that pass most often, by kind:

Why a shaped candle passes the filters

Our candles are hand-poured in pure soy wax, and every piece except one is unscented and shaped: a spiral, a flower, a shell. That matters for a mixed team. A twisted spiral pillar carries no faith, no gender and no diet. It looks good unlit on a desk, so the colleague who never lights a candle still has something to keep. Our only scented candle is Vanilla Reverie (Rs 549, amber glass jar), and for a large mixed group we would suggest the unscented pieces.

If you want to offer a little choice, the five spiral colours help. Navy and ivory read as formal; pink and yellow as cheerful. You can let each person pick a colour, or put one of each colour in the set of five for a small team.

Matching the gift to the people, not the average

Two more habits keep a gift inclusive. First, send the same gift to everyone at the same level, including people who work from home. Second, if your team celebrates different festivals, gift on a neutral date such as the company anniversary or the New Year rather than one faith's festival, or gift at each festival in turn.

When a candle does not suit your team

Choose another gift if your office bans open flames and people would have to take the gift home to use it, if the team strongly prefers practical items like bottles or bags, or if you need a fixed delivery date we cannot promise. A plant, a voucher or quality stationery will serve you better there. We make candles, not merchandise or tech.
