Spas and salons are not the same room

A spa is quiet, dim and slow: treatment rooms lit low, a therapist present the whole time, a reception that should feel calm the moment someone walks in. Candles belong there. A salon is bright and busy, full of hair spray, dryers, nail polish and remover, several of which catch fire easily. In a salon, keep candles as unlit decor at the reception, and never put a flame near the styling chairs or the nail bar.

• Home fragrance brands: scented jars and diffusers if you want the whole space to smell of one thing.

Safety, said plainly

We hold no commercial or spa safety certification. Your fire rules and your own judgement decide where a flame may burn. When one is lit: never leave it unattended, keep it on a stable, heat-proof surface, keep it away from towels, oils and sprays, trim the wick to about 5 mm, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
