Useful gifts under Rs 500: practical ideas people actually use, and when a candle counts as oneUseful gifts under Rs 500: practical ideas people actually use, and when a candle counts as one

A useful gift is one that gets used within a month

"Useful" is easy to test. Ask: will this person use it in the next 30 days? If yes, it is useful. If it will sit in a cupboard waiting for an occasion, it is decor or a keepsake, however nice.

We are a candle brand, so let us be fair about our own product. Most of our range is sculpted decor: teddies, seashells, peony flowers. Those are gifts people keep, not use. Two of our products pass the 30-day test, because they are made to be lit and finished:

• Diya Candles, Rs 449 for 6: terracotta-red soy wax diyas with a lattice rim. For anyone who lights a diya at the mandir every evening, six diyas are six evenings without fuss over oil and wicks.
• Sunflower Tealights or Daisy Tealights, Rs 449 for 10: tealights in clear cups. Useful for a dinner table, a balcony evening, and a power cut, when a cupped tealight is a safer light than a loose candle.

Both are hand-poured pure soy wax, made in Jalandhar.

Useful gifts under Rs 500, from us and from everywhere else

Most of this table is not ours, and that is the honest picture of useful gifts at this budget.

When a candle is the useful choice

• She lights a diya every day. Then a pack of diya candles is as practical as a box of agarbatti.
• They live where power cuts are common. Tealights in cups are steady, and they stand on their own.
• They host often. A pack of ten covers a dinner table and a balcony.

When it is not

• For a student in a hostel, where flames are usually not allowed. Give the bottle or the power bank.
• For an office desk, for the same reason.
• For someone who does not light candles at all. A decorative candle then becomes a shelf piece, which is fine, but not "useful".

Making a useful gift feel like a gift

Practical gifts can feel like shopping you did for someone. Two things fix that. First, pick the better version of the everyday thing: the steel bottle in her favourite colour, the diya set in a lattice design instead of plain clay. Second, explain why in the note: "for your evening pooja" or "for the next power cut" tells them you thought about their day, not just the price.

Staying under Rs 500 once shipping is added

Shipping is Rs 79 below an order of Rs 999. One pack of Diya Candles delivered comes to Rs 528, just over Rs 500. Our Lotus Candle at Rs 349 lands at Rs 428, under the line, and it is no-fragrance, made for a mandir.

If you are buying two useful gifts, the Diya Candles with the Matki Candles (Rs 599 for 4) come to Rs 1,048 and ship free. You keep one and give one.

Using it safely, which is part of useful

Burn on a stable, heat-proof surface, never leave a burning candle unattended, trim the wick to about 5 mm before each use and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
