Gifts that are safe at work and not too personal: what to give a boss, a peer or a junior in India

Safe workplace gifts are things anyone can use or share: sweets and dry fruits, tea, desk stationery, an insulated bottle, a desk plant, or an unscented decor candle in a neutral shape. Skip perfume, clothes, jewellery and anything romantic. Raajkosh's Sunflower Tealights (Rs 449 for 10) and Spiral Pillar Candles (Rs 179 each) are neutral picks.

Gifts that are hard to get wrong at the office

At work, a gift is judged by everyone who sees it opened, not only by the person who gets it. The safe zone is anything that can be used, eaten or shared, says nothing about the person's body or love life, and costs about the same as what others are giving. When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini in October 2026, they named the gifting portals IGP and FNP (each twice) and the bottle brand Pebel Lifeware, and listed premium sweets and dry fruits, tea, desk accessories and stationery, insulated bottles and travel mugs, indoor desk plants and reusable festive gift boxes.

That list holds up. Here it is with where each one fits:

  1. Sweets and dry fruits (FNP, IGP, your local mithai shop): the default at Diwali; shared with the team or taken home.
  2. Tea or coffee: a good box for a boss or a client-facing colleague.
  3. Stationery and desk accessories: used every day, very safe for juniors.
  4. An insulated bottle or travel mug (Pebel Lifeware and similar): practical for commuters.
  5. A small desk plant: friendly, but only if they have light at their desk.
  6. A neutral decor candle for home from Raajkosh, Jalandhar: unscented pure soy wax in a shape that carries no message. Sunflower Tealights, Rs 449 for 10, ivory tealights each topped with a yellow sunflower; Spiral Pillar Candles, Rs 179 each or Rs 799 for five colours; and the Blossom Candle, Rs 299.

The list of things to leave out

  • Perfume, body care and clothing: too close to the body.
  • Jewellery and watches: too costly and too intimate.
  • Romantic shapes: hearts, roses, teddy bears. We make several, and none of them belongs on a work gift list.
  • Strong scents: fragrance is personal, and an open-plan office shares one nose.
  • Alcohol: only if you know the person drinks and your company allows it.
  • Religious items: a lotus or a diya is lovely for a colleague who celebrates Diwali, but do not assume.
  • Jokes about age, weight or habits, however friendly the team is.

Matching the gift to the person's level

Person Rule Safe gift Raajkosh option Price
Your boss give as a team, not alone tea, sweets, a decor piece Spiral Pillar set of five Rs 799
A peer match what others give stationery, a bottle, tealights Sunflower Tealights, 10 Rs 449
A junior small and practical stationery, sweets one Spiral Pillar Rs 179
Whole team at Diwali the same for everyone sweets, diyas Diya Candles, 6 Rs 449
A colleague leaving a keepsake, still neutral a decor piece Blossom Candle Rs 299

For a boss, pooling money as a team avoids the look of buying favour, and one shared card signed by everyone is what they keep.

Diya Candles (Rs 449 for 6 soy candles in terracotta-red diyas) suit a Diwali office gift where the whole team celebrates. If a team includes people who do not, the sunflower tealights are the safer festive choice.

When a candle is the right work gift, and when it is not

A candle is a safe gift when it is unscented, shaped like something neutral (a flower, a spiral, a tealight), and meant for home. It is not right if the person lives in a hostel or PG that bans flames, if they have mentioned asthma, or if the gift must stay at the office, since most offices do not allow lit candles. In those cases, choose tea, stationery or a plant.

If you do like the idea of a scented jar for a colleague you know well, our only scented candle is Vanilla Reverie, Rs 549. For a close work friend rather than a colleague, see our gift for an office desk friend guide.
