What a Lohri hamper usually holds

Ask any Punjabi family what they send for Lohri and the answer starts with food: rewri, gajak, til laddoo, chikki, mungfali and popcorn, often with dry fruits and a box of mithai. For close family, clothes or a shawl go with it. The sweets get eaten in a week. The good hampers add one thing that stays on in the house after the festival.

That last piece is where we come in. Raajkosh makes hand-poured soy wax candles in Jalandhar. We do not sell rewri, gajak or any food, so the honest way to use us is: buy the sweets fresh from your halwai, and add a candle that we send to you.

Three that suit a Lohri box:

Choosing by who it is for

Parents and in-laws. Keep it traditional: sweets, dry fruits, a shawl, and the Diya Candles for the evening. The terracotta colour looks festive without looking like a Diwali leftover.

Friends who have a terrace party. They are hosting and will need light. Send the Sunflower Tealights, which go along a parapet or window sill.

Packing tips that matter for this hamper

• Keep sweets and candles apart. Gajak and chikki can leave oil and jaggery stickiness on anything they touch. Put the sweets in a tin or a sealed box, and the candle in its own box.
• Do not leave the hamper in a warm car. Soy wax softens in heat. In January this is rarely a problem, but keep it away from a room heater.
• Add a card that says what to do. "Light these on Lohri night" turns a candle into part of the evening.

• Dry fruit boxes, which keep longer than gajak.
