A gift for a new mother that is not for the baby: what she will actually use, and when a candle is right
For a new mother, give help first (cooked meals, a cleaner, a massage voucher), then comfort (nursing loungewear, a big insulated bottle, a postpartum care hamper from The Mama Circle or Janma). A candle is a later gift, for evenings in a room away from the baby: the unscented Raajkosh Floral Candle Duo (Rs 649) is kept as decor even unlit.

Key takeaways
- Help first: meals, a cleaner, a water bottle
- Never keep a lit candle in the nursery or near a sleeping baby
- A candle is a later gift, kept as decor and lit only when she has time
- The unscented Floral Candle Duo is Rs 649 for two
- Tell her the parcel is coming so the doorbell does not wake the baby
Gifts that are only for her, from practical to pampering
Everyone brings something for the baby. The new mother is usually the one who gets forgotten. When we asked ChatGPT and Gemini in October 2026, their suggestions fell into these groups, roughly from most useful in the first weeks to nicest a little later:
- Help. Cooked meals for a week, a paid cleaner for a few days, a cab budget for check-ups. Nothing beats this.
- Recovery and comfort. Nursing-friendly loungewear, a large insulated water bottle, a good pillow. Sites such as The Mama Circle, Janma and Charmbox were cited for postpartum care and pamper boxes.
- Nourishment. A hamper of dry fruits, laddoos or traditional postpartum foods, if the family follows that custom.
- A massage or spa voucher, for when she is ready and her doctor agrees.
- Something pretty that is hers. A piece of jewellery, a book, or a candle for her own corner. Ferns N Petals was named, and HerGifts cited, for gifts like these.
Where a candle fits in the first months, and where it does not
We make candles, and we will be plain: in the first weeks, most new mothers do not want one more thing to watch. A lit candle needs attention, and a home with a newborn has very little spare attention.
- Never keep a lit candle in the nursery or in a room where the baby is sleeping.
- Never leave a candle burning while she feeds or naps.
- Strong fragrance can bother a newborn and a tired mother. Unscented is the safer choice.
- Keep any candle, lit or unlit, out of reach of a crawling baby later on.
So a candle works best as a decor piece for her dressing table or living room, lit only when she has an evening to herself, with another adult around, in a room away from the baby.
Picking a piece she can enjoy unlit
These Raajkosh candles are hand-poured soy wax from Jalandhar and look good without a flame:
- Floral Candle Duo, Rs 649 for 2: peony-shaped, deep rose and ivory. Unscented. Our first pick for her.
- Blossom Candle, Rs 299: a round ivory candle wrapped in wax blossoms. A small add-on to a meal hamper.
- Marble Seashell Candles, Rs 999 for 2: marbled conch shells, for a mother who likes the sea.
- Vanilla Reverie, Rs 549: our only scented candle. Better saved for a few months on, when she wants her own evening ritual back.

Getting it to her without a doorbell at nap time
A doorbell during a nap is no gift. With a Raajkosh order:
- Ship to her address at checkout, and add a gift note that says 'for you, not the baby'.
- Dispatch in 24 to 48 hours; delivery 2 to 7 days after dispatch. Check the estimate for her pincode on the product page; we cannot schedule a time slot, so tell her it is coming.
- Prepaid only (UPI, card, net banking or wallet through Razorpay), so nobody has to find cash at the door. No cash on delivery.
- Free shipping from Rs 999. Floral Candle Duo plus Vanilla Reverie is Rs 1,198 and ships free.
- If anything is damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery for a replacement or refund.
Buy elsewhere for postpartum care, nursing wear and food: we are a small, new candle workshop and sell candles only.
When she does light it: trim the wick to about 5 mm, use a stable, heat-proof surface far from the baby, never leave it unattended, and keep each burn to 3 to 4 hours.
