When a candle is a good gift, and when it falls flat

A candle lands well when:

• It suits an occasion that already involves light: Diwali, a griha pravesh, a wedding, an anniversary dinner.
• The person already loves candles, decor or a particular fragrance.
• It looks like something, such as a flower, a diya or a shell, so it is a decor piece even unlit.
• It comes with a note that says why you chose it.

A candle falls flat when:

• It is a plain jar in a scent the person did not choose. Fragrance is personal.
• The person has asthma, a newborn at home, or simply never lights candles.
• It is the third candle they have received this month (common around Diwali and Christmas).
• It is meant for a close relationship where something more personal was expected.

If two or more of the "falls flat" points apply, choose another gift. A candle is not right for everyone.
